Tamir Hendelman: Plays Monk & Ellington

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Tamir Hendelman (Piano / US)

Please open your heart for this very interesting American pianist. Tamir Hendelman is at the keys in the Clayton/Hamilton Orchestra, and then most jazz fans know that we are in the hands of the established part of jazz; where we focus on the fine tunes, the beautiful harmonic excursions and the never-ending life of improvisational possibilities. In other words: The bottomless bag of American jazz-standards. Reviews from Hendelman’s homeland mention a brilliant and playful musician, who never sucks up to the listener, but constantly seeks for new gems in the music. We are looking forward to witness this in Copenhagen.

Students / under 26: 130 DKK

Tag vel imod denne yderst interessante amerikanske pianist.

Paolo Russo: Cinquanta

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Paolo Russo (Bandoneon/Piano/Composer / IT)Thomas Fonnesbæk (Bass / DK)Marcello di Leonardo (Drums / IT)Gerard Presencer (27/9) (Trumpet / UK)Nico Gori (27/9) (Clarinet / IT)Bjarke Falgren (28/9) (Violin / DK)Lelo Nika (28/9) (Accordion / SE)

These nights we are celebrating Paolo Russo's 50 years with two concerts that Russo has named “Cinquanta” – dedicated to his musical universe. Russo has invited some of the many international musicians he has played with throughout his long career. You can look forward to a musical journey that moves from clear, Nordic atmospheres, to rich Mediterranean aromas and South American rhythms with lots of room for improvisation, but with focal point in Russo’s latest album, “Overland”. Russo has, throughout his career, released 14 albums as a solo artist and bandleader and has played all over the world – which can be heard in his superior skills on the piano and the bandoneon and in his playful and colorful interaction with the accompanying musicians.

Special guests: Gerard Presencer (27/9) (Trumpet / UK) Nico Gori (27/9) (Clarinet / IT) Bjarke Falgren (28/9) (Violin / DK) Lelo Nika (28/9) (Accordion / SE)

Special guests: Gerard Presencer (27/9) (Trumpet / UK) Nico Gori (27/9) (Clarinet / IT) Bjarke Falgren (28/9) (Violin / DK) Lelo Nika (28/9) (Accordion / SE)

Kalaha / Monten

Emil de Waal (Drums, Electronics / DK)Niclas Knudsen (Guitar, Talk-box / DK)Mikael ‘Spejderrobot’ Elkjær (Computer, Electronics / DK)

Kalaha is inspired by both West African funk, techno-rave and jazz. Their music is a constantly changing mix of quirky ideas, unrestrained energi and precision. The band has achieved to renew their live show again and again, through a long series of concerts. Their newest initiative is a spectacular lighting design, where the fusion between sound and lights accentuates that Kalaha must be experienced live. The concept ”Monten” presents musicians who are not afraid to exceed the limits of genres by merging them and creating new musical expressions. Genres such as soul, hiphop, folk and electronic music will be weaved together when the borders of jazz are explored.

Spöket i Köket (Ghost in the kitchen), is the heaviest folk bigband in the Nordic. A Swedish/Danish/Belgian lounge-rave orchestra gathering dancing tunes and ballads from the Nordic and Canadian tradition, as well as from their own heads. Ten musicians on twenty different instruments provide a wide variety of sounds, enabling the individual backgrounds of each member to shine through, while together creating a greater whole. Styles such as manouche-jazz and heavy metal will not go unnoticed in soundscape of traditional music. The band started out in 2015, making a 20-concert tour in four weeks the first summer, and their first record ”Den nya spisen” (The new stove), netted them a nomination for newcomer of the year at the Swedish folk- and world music gala of 2017. April 2019 will see the release of their second album ”Château du garage”, a small catastrophony that will leave nobody sitting without a smile. Look forward to a tremendous night!

The Norwegian guitarist Lage Lund is a rising star within the innovative part of semi-electric jazz. Lund is focused on uniting the European and American jazz. He has studied at both Berklee and Juillard and he is a popular sideman when the young generation of East Coast musicians needs some raw energy and sophisticated guitar. The American jazz guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel says: “Of the younger cats, Lage is THE one. He's a wonderful player. Scary actually!" Fine words from someone who really appreciates good six-string guitar play.

Thomas Clausen (Piano / DK)Carlos Malta (Saxophone/Flute / BR)Romulo Duarte (Bass / BR)Niclas Campagnol (Drums / SE)Special guest: Tomas Franck (Tenor Sax / DK)

Thomas Clausen is turning 70 on October 5th. Clausen has been the leading pianist within what was previously called “modern jazz” which today covers a huge range within jazz. His brilliant technique and unquenchable desire to challenge himself is legendary and his ability to continuously acquire new opportunities to develop and refine his artistic expression still creates great respect. On this occasion he has gathered this new constellation who reflects Clausen’s musical universe. The music varies from Clausen’s established expression with jazz as main focus to his more recent desire to collaborate with Brazilian musicians. We will travel far and wide in Thomas Clausen’s musical world.

The five band members of Girls in Airports got together in 2009 and since then they have been expanding their sound universe with new musical inspiration from modern jazz, global folklore, minimalism, synthesizer music and an atmospheric sound. The critics have compared the band to names such as Brian Eno, Radiohead, King Crimson, Jon Hassell, Sun Ra and Jan Garbarek. “Girls in Airports performed a very fascinating and special demonstration while exploring the unbound and unfamiliar” - Politiken.

The concept ”Monten” presents musicians who are not afraid to exceed the limits of genres by merging them and creating new musical expressions. Genres such as soul, hiphop, folk and electronic music will be weaved together when the borders of jazz are explored.

Katrine Madsen (Vocal / DK)Henrik Gunde (Piano / DK)Jesper Bodilsen (Bass / DK)Anders Kjellberg (Drums / SE)

Having a large, beautiful voice is not enough. One also needs the right songs to sing and the proper backing for everything to work. Katrine Madsen has all of this! Her voice is probably the warmest and most intense to be heard in Denmark, and she knows how to conceive the joyful as well as the more dramatic songs, so that you as a listener believes in her. The setlist contains the best from the shelf of Standards and a handful of Katrine Madsens own songs – among the best in their tradition. Oh – and the backing is as good as it gets; Gunde, Bodilsen and Kjellberg rolls out a carpet of light and colorful security underneath Katrine Madsens voice.

Students / under 26: 150 DKK

Nikolaj Bentzon & the New Funk

Talking about funky jazz in Denmark? If you are, pianist and composer Nikolaj Bentzon is the man! His group Bentzon Brotherhood has released six CDs and has proven to be a hard-hitter in that particular genre, through cooperation with a.o. jazz/funk-icons bassists Paul Jackson and drummer Mike Clark from legendary Headhunters. In this new group Bentzon presents the new generation of musicians, who have transferred the super-funky output to an acoustic approach – while keeping the tightness and the physical from the original output. In the centre of the music you still have Bentzons enthralling piano-playing, with a touch of keyboards. Off course still focusing on keeping the groovy beat.

Georg Riedel/Jan Lundgren

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.

If you ask Danish jazz fans what the most Swedish jazz they know is, 95 % are going to answer that it is the legendary recording “Visa från Utanmyra” from 1964 with Jan Johansson and Georg Riedel from the LP “Jazz På Svenska”. The special Swedish melancholia and melodic beauty and strength will stay forever with those who have heard it. Swedish jazz today still has this calm and dignified autumn feeling but also a lot more to offer. The pianist Jan Lundgren is one of the sister country’s most prominent jazz musicians. This evening he joins Georg Riedel and adds majestic, peaceful and elegant piano playing. Original compositions by both musicians, standards and Swedish songs in new disguise is included and who knows, “Visa från Utanmyra” may appear on the music stand.

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Enrico Pieranunzi (Piano / IT)Thomas Fonnesbæk (Bass / DK)

The Italien pianist, composer and arranger, Enrico Pieranunzi, is known and loved in most of the world. He is born in Rome and is originally trained as a classic pianist and is acknowledged as one of the greatest European jazz musicians. Pieranunzi’s playful style is a pleasure to listen to and the focus is always on going deeply into the compositions and draw undiscovered opportunities from them, always with a humorous and joyful overview. This evening he is joined by Danish bass player Thomas Fonnesbæk, who still manages to evolve his playing becoming more and more sublime. Fonnesbæk is the natural heir to the Danish double-bass throne, which has been empty since NHØP passed away. This will be a night with both the standard repertoire of jazz and the two musicians' own works.
