Denmark and the world recently lost a great jazz artist, namely Horace Parlan. He was resident in Denmark from 1973, where he played in Montmartre for the first time, and at the same occasion met his wife Norma.

Horace based his unique piano style on the possibilities left available to him, after suffering polio as a child, but he made the most out of it, and became a master of voicings, and lyricism. His roots in the blues tradition were always present, and he remained active up until nearly 80 years old, when blindness made it impossible to continue.

Horace leaves behind a unique body of important contributions to the jazz world. He is famous for his work with Charles Mingus, Archie Shepp, and not the least his fine albums on Blue Note, as a bandleader in trio and larger formats.

For Danish jazz, he became a blessing, and the Danish Jazz world has benefitted from Horace’s contributions through all the years he stayed here. With his kind and gentle being, and permanent encouragement to us all, he became a sort of holy man. Until the end, he continued going out and listen to American and Danish jazz artists, and whenever he was in the room, there was a certain magic.

This memorial concert is a tribute to Horace and his fantastic music, left behind for us to play and enjoy. The line of musicians performing the program all had a connection to Horace in one way or another. They all represent the top of Danish Jazz having paid their dues through long careers. The “Love & Peace Band” and “US Four” will play, and other combinations will present both Jan Lundgren and Christina von Bülow. This will be a very special and unique afternoon concert, a tribute to Horace Parlan.

The concert is sponsored by Ben Webster Foundation and Paradise Jazz.
