Concerts in May

Bill Evans may be the greatest jazz pianist in history, loved by jazz fans all over the world.

In 1965 Alex Riel and Eddie Gomez got to know each other when they played in Bill Evans’ trio.

Together with Carsten Dahl, on this special evening, they celebrate both Montmartre and Bill Evans, that have both been of great significance to the three of them.

Among the world’s leading bassists, Eddie Gomez is one of the most original voices and he has been the first choice of musicians such as Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Eliane Elias, McCoy Tyner and others.

His playing is legendary.

Now he brings his new quartet to Montmartre to give us an idea on what the sound of acoustic jazz with attention to melody is like when played by four stars.

Fred Hersch is one of the greatest jazz pianists around, and he always astonishes his audience with his lyrical playing, inspired by Bill Evans.

In recent years his playing has turned more dynamic and he is considered one of the most intelligent jazz pianists.

Montmartre is proud to present him in three exciting constellations with European musicians of his choice. This first night he will play in a beautiful duo with Italian clarinetist Nico Gori. They will include compositions from their album "Da Vinci" - their first as a duo - which was released on March 29, 2012 for the label Bee Jazz in Europe.

Join the Late Night show "Natholdet" at Montmartre on Fridays after 11PM, when the young cats take over the stage featuring surprise guests for the best jazz party in town. 

Natholdet (The Night Shift) is an old Montmartre tradition that began in 1962 when Jazzhus Montmartre was awarded its license to stay open beyond midnight.

Throughout the years, many of the finest Danish and foreign musicians has played with Natholdet. 

Now the tradition continues.

Montmartre provides space for specially invited guests and young talented artists every Friday from 11:00pm to 02:30am.

The after hours jazz party is young and informal and buzzing with life.

Johan Christoffersson is an upcoming giant on the international jazz scene. In 2011, he received the soloist award in New Nordic Jazz Comets and the demand for him has been overwhelming since then. His sound is original, involving and clearly inspired by legendary alto saxophonists from Charlie Parker to Cannonball Adderly.  Three of Denmark’s most swingin’ musicians join him.

Although Sara Indrio may be most widely known for her part as "Giulia" in the movie Italian for beginners, she is considered one of the most interesting songwriters in Denmark at the moment.

Not unlike Joni Mitchell Sara Indrio picks freely from the folk as well as the jazz/world genre to accompany her poetic lyrics about life in modern society.

The unique vocal of Sara Indrio is beautifully expressed in a new collaboration with Paolo Russo who also contributes to this evening’s repertoire, that holds in store a unique concert experience by this outstanding group of musicians put together just for the occasion.

Once again, Steen Rasmussen invites one of Brazil’s irresistible vocalists to Copenhagen.

Together with Leo Minax his quarteto plays modern, Brazilian music as we know it from Gilberto Gil.

Sophisticated, jazzy folklore strongly connected to the highlands of Brazil, Minas Gereas, where Leo Minax has his roots.

Additionally, the quartet embraces the great Brazilian repertoire of the king of bossa nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim, which Leo Minax interprets in exceptionally beautiful and endearing ways.

Christina Von Bülow is a unique Danish musician. Her beautiful tune, excellent taste and sense of melody are very special and she particularly enjoys playing the standard jazz repertoire**. **Special attention this evening goes to Doug Raney, who is considered one of the greatest jazz guitarists and who is especially known for his long-lasting teamwork with Chet Baker, with whom Jesper Lundgaard has played as well.

During the years, Copenhagen has gained exceptionally from the immigration of several great musicians.

Most recently, English Gerard Presencer, who is in great demand in Europe and who has played with stars such as Sting and Chick Corea and not least Hungary’s most important jazz musician Kálmán Oláh, whose tune and sense of rhythm is comparable to that of Keith Jarrett.

Presencer and Oláh have created an exciting quartet, mainly performing their own material.

It is both beautiful, exciting and particularly virtuous.** **
