Steve Kuhn Trio

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Steve Kuhn (Piano / US)Aidan O'Donnell (Bass / UK)Billy Drummond (Drums / US)

After a career of a half-century, Steve Kuhn has earned renown as a lyrical and affecting pianists, with an unfailingly beautiful touch and a sophisticated sense of swing. JAZZIZ Magazine has described Kuhn’s distinctive sound: “Few other pianists, regardless of genre, can tease such an evocative range of timbres from their instrument. Kuhn’s lower register is as dark and rich as Belgian chocolate, and his upper register has the light, translucent quality of ice-cold champagne.” As a composer, Kuhn’s songbook is one of quality rather than quantity. He has revisited many pieces repeatedly over the years, revealing their depth anew with each fresh interpretation, like gems held up to different light. This time Kuhn visits Montmartre with his trio consisting of Aidan O’Donnell on bass and Billy Drummond on drums and we are looking forward to seeing Steve Kuhn knock himself out in his favored trio format.

JAZZIZ Magazine har beskrevet Kuhns lyd således: “Few other pianists, regardless of genre, can tease such an evocative range of timbres from their instrument. Kuhn’s lower register is as dark and rich as Belgian chocolate, and his upper register has the light, translucent quality of ice-cold champagne.”

Jacob Young Quintet: Forever Young

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Jacob Young (Guitar / NO)Trygve Seim (Tenor Sax / NO)Marcin Wasilewski (Piano / PL)Slawomir Kurkiewicz (Bass / PL)Michael Misklewicz (Drums / PL)

On Jacob Young's third ECM release he introduced a new quintet, in which he is joined by Trygve Seim and all three members of the Marcin Wasilewski Trio. As a composer, Young keeps his heart on display, balancing buoyant melodic lines with a slight touch of melancholy that suits the Polish rhythm section perfectly. There's a slow, deliberate approach to storytelling that is distinctly European. Young and Seim have known each other since they were, respectively, 17 and 16, and attending the same Norwegian music high school. This long-time partnership clearly shows when Seim is moving in breathy unison with Young's dark, organic acoustic tone. Seim has a presence and mood-setting ability that alludes to fellow Nordic saxophonist Jan Garberek. There's a multilayered delicacy to the music and performance of this quintet.

Stereolog #1

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Anja C. Andersen (Astrophysicist / DK)Ole Fogh Kirkeby (Philosopher / DK)Tao Højgaard (Guitar / DK)Kristor Brødsgaard (Bass / DK)

One of jazz's more playful and innovative characters, guitarist Tao Højgaard, drops saxophones and trumpets, and instead uses scientists as melodic carriers in a new concert form at Jazzhus Montmartre. Tao Højgaard has invited two of the most recognized scientific voices, astrophysicist Anja C. Andersen and philosopher Ole Fogh Kirkeby, to be soloists in a different concert form, under his alter ego Mute State. A concert form where a conversation between two scientists is made conductor in the music. The music becomes an abstract host which through sound structures, dynamic shifts and harmonious artifacts, divides the scientists' conversation into mood chapters.

Both musicians and professors will relate to the subject "Spirit and Structure", a topic that has a huge impact not just for art and science but for people in general. Anja C. Andersen is an astronomer and astrophysicist at the Niels Bohr Institute and a very active communicator of astronomical research. Ole Fogh Kirkeby is a philosopher, leadership theorist, author and professor at CBS. Therefore, this becomes not just a meeting between music and dialogue, but also a meeting between paradigms of both social and natural science.

Kenneth Dahl Knudsen Quintet: Album Release

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Kenneth Dahl Knudsen (Bass / DK)Magnus Thuelund (Sax / DK)Brian Massaka (Guitar / PL)William Larsson (Piano / SE)Daniel Sommer (Drums / DK)

The Danish jazzmusician, composer, arranger and bandleader, Kenneth Dahl Knudsen, is an internationally in demand sideman due to his intuitive virtuosity on double bass, a mastery that led him to work with names like John Scofield or Aaron Parks. The release of his fourth album “Tété” sees him stepping into the limelight as a composer and bandleader of his international quintet. Musical influences from all over the world come together with a naturalness that implies Knudsen has the formula for successfully translating the fundamental idea of jazz into the age of globalisation. As a bandleader, he manages to unite all the experiences he made on his recent journey through 33 countries and tie them all up into one impressive complete work. Backed by the blindly intuitive interplay of his quintet Knudsen combines harmonies of the European music tradition with the playful rhythms of Africa and Latin America as well as the expressiveness of Jewish folksongs as if they belonged together naturally, sounding like no one else but himself.

Her sound is modern and Nordic with clear references to legendary jazz singers such as Nancy Wilson and Benny Carter. Her concerts are known for being filled with humor, a charming presence and musical bonanza, which comes to show by playfully taking chances on stage.

Sinne Eeg/Thomas Fonnesbæk

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Sinne Eeg (Vocal / DK)Thomas Fonnesbæk (Bass / DK)

Sinne Eeg is here to stay, and for good reason. Her talent is beyond belief and her voice sounds like a choir of angels. After two evenings with Sinne Eeg Group, it?s time for Eeg and Fonnesbæk to present their amazing duo constellation. Danish bassists occupy a special position on the international jazz scene. Through NHØP, Mads Vinding, Bo Stief and Jesper Lundgaard, we have created a strong international bass brand. And this brand is being carried on today by a host of splendid bass players. One of the most remarkable names is Thomas Fonnesbæk, who plays with a technical surplus and a melodic sensibility that hasn't been heard since NHØP. Eeg and Fonnesbæk have a completely unique interplay and understanding of each other?s sound, and they do indeed take the meeting of vocal and bass to new heights!

Gauthier Toux Trio

“Upcoming” is Montmartre’s series of talent concerts where upcoming artists test the boundaries of jazz.
Gauthier Toux (Piano / FR)Simon Tailleu (Bass / FR)Maxence Sibille (Drums / FR)

With his third album “The colours you see” (out on UK label Naim Records on May 4th – a label home to Yazz Ahmed, Sons of Kemet…) as the leader of his trio, pianist Gauthier Toux has tried to highlight his very personal approach to colours. Ever since he was discovered to be colour-blind, he has never ceased to wonder about alternative ways in which they can be perceived, venturing beyond the names assigned to each of them. Each new composition is like the setting to music of anecdotes which relate me to these lights and shades.

Formed in October 2013, the Gauthier Toux Trio brings together three young exponents from the European jazz scene. All three are enthusiasts of the jazz tradition, but are also into electronic music, rock, hip-hop - they are on the same page both personally and musically.

After almost four years playing and travelling together and two albums, More than Ever (2015) and Unexpected Things (2016, NoMadMusic), both critically acclaimed (France Musique’s Choix award, ‘Albums of the month’ selection in Les Inrocks, April 2016, TSF Jazz radio, FIP’s ‘Club Jazz’) there is a sense of brotherhood and unity about these three musicians which manifests itself in music whose key quality is its sincerity.

The Gauthier Toux Trio won prizes at the 2016 Jazz à La Défense national competition, the 2016 Jazz Or Jazz competition, and Jazz à Vienne’s RéZZo Focal in 2017.

Trine Lunau (sang, harmonika / DK)Peter Sund (sang, guitar / DK)Palle Hjort (klaver, keyboards / DK)

Writing simple songs is a hard art to master and at the moment very few songwriters in Denmark do this as well as Lunau&Sund. They have created a sound for themselves mixing americana with the danish song-tradition, and after 17 years as a duo they have ascended their interplay to beautiful heights. For this concert they are bringing keyboard wizard Palle Hjort with them, who is known as one of the most sought after musicians in all of Denmark.

Sheila Jordan & Cameron Brown

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Sheila Jordan (Vocal / US)Cameron Brown (Bass / US)

Jordan began singing as a child and by the time she was in her early teens was working semi-professionally in Detroit clubs. Her first great influence was Charlie Parker and, indeed, most of her influences have been instrumentalists rather than singers. She moved to New York in the early 50s, but it was not until the early 60s that she made her first recordings. She presented a uncompromising style and has through the years developed her unique musical trademarks, such as the frequent and unexpected sweeping changes of pitch, which still tend to confound an uninitiated audience. Her preference to the bass and voice set led to a remarkable collaboration with bassist Cameron Brown, whom she has been performing with all over the world for more than twenty years so far and they have released the live albums “I’ve Grown Accustomed to the Bass” and “Celebration”. Entirely non-derivative, Jordan is one of only a tiny handful of jazz singers who fully deserve the appellation and for whom no other term will do.

Luna Matz (Vocal / DK)David Nedergaard (Keys / DK)Troels Dankert (Drums / DK)Pelle Lindsjö (Bass / SE)

The trip-soul group Takykardia, who has taken their name from the Finnish word for rapid heartbeat, presents a genre-breaking and playful universe with Luna Matz' seductive vocal in front. The pace is often slow, heavy and trip-hop like, sometimes interrupted by jazz-unpredictable rhythms. Their instrumental sound image has a beautiful contrast to Luna Matz' bright and playful vocal. The group met with different backgrounds in classical music, art punk, jazz and performance art and with a common fascination of trip-hop and a devotion to captivating aesthetics. In February 2018, they released their self-titled debut EP, which has been praised to the clouds of Danish and international blogs such as EARMILK, Noisey, Kaltblut Magazine, Dummy, HighClouds and Crack in the Road, which calls the EP: "A uniquely ambitious and massively exciting first step.” We look forward to leaning back into sensitive and imaginative musical dream sequences!

A uniquely ambitious and massively exciting first step.”

Two years ago, Mynsterland played their debut concert in a completely packed Montmartre. Since then, they have established themselves as one of the most sought-after, ambitious and original bands on the Danish folk-scene. Even though their recent tour saw them visit some of the country’s bigger venues and concert halls, they have decided to play at Montmartre again, where it all started – despite the venue’s small size.

We are proud to present her at Montmartre again, cause her last visit was, by far, a great experience. This time she can be experienced on stage with a Danish/American Quartet consisting of Magnus Hjorth at the keys, Graig Earl on bass and Janus Templeton at the drums. Two great evenings awaiting!

Fredrik Kronkvist Quartet ft. Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Fredrik Kronkvist (Alto Sax / SE)Orrin Evans (Piano / US)Martin Sjöstedt (Bass / SE)Jeff "Tain" Watts (Drums / US)

Saxophonist and composer Fredrik Kronkvist celebrates the 15th anniversary of his album debut in own name. In that regard, he publishes the KRONICLES album with an international group of exciting world stars, which becomes his 16th album as a bandleader. For the same reason, Kronkvist publishes a book with nodes from his hundreds of recorded and published compositions. On KRONICLES, he creates powerful new music with his virtuoso play on the saxophone accompanied by a terrific rhythm section. The quartet consists of Jeff "Tain" Watts, a champion of modern jazz drumming, pianist Orrin Evans, who has been renowned for his eternal inventiveness at the keys, and Sweden's internationally sought-after bassist Martin Sjöstedt. With Kronkvist's compositions as a foundation, the group builds an adventurous world of exciting rhythms, catchy harmonies and beautiful melodies performed easily, playfully and with a passion of capturing the moment through improvisations.
