AUGUST 2010

AUGUST 5-8 at 20.00 o'clock (8pm)

Celebrating the 1959 jazz masterpiece

“TAKE FIVE” – DAVE BRUBECK TRIBUTE

  • Christina Von Bülow (alto sax/DK)
  • Søren Kristiansen (piano/DK) Aug 5 & 7
  • Olivier Antunes (piano/DK) Aug 6
  • Anders Christensen (bass/DK)
  • Frands Rifbjerg (drums/DK)

An all-star group of highly celebrated Danish musicians comes to the Montmartre for a celebration of a milestone album in jazz history, “Time Out”, the 1959 album by American pianist/composer Dave Brubeck and his quartet with the cool sounding alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, drummer Joe Morello and bassist Eugene Wright. Although the album was intended as an experiment (using time signatures unusual for jazz, such as waltz, 9/8 and most famously 5/4) and received negative reviews by critics upon its release, it became one of the best-known and biggest-selling jazz albums of all times, featuring now classics such as “Take Five”,  “Blue Rondo a la Turk” and “Strange Meadow Lark” .

AUGUST 12-14 at 20.00 o'clock (8pm)

American saxophonist meets Swedish pianist

ERIC ALEXANDER / JAN LUNDGREN QUARTET featuring Kristian Leth & Jesper Lundgaard

  • Eric Alexander (tenor sax/USA)
  • Jan Lundgren (piano/SE)
  • Jesper lundgaard (bass/DK)
  • Kristian Leth (drums/DK)

While one is known for his temperamental and fast phrases, the other is renowned for his melodic and lyrical playing. The encounter between New York based Eric Alexander (tenor sax) and Swedish Jan Lundgren brings memories back to when Stan Getz and Jan Johansson used to play at Montmartre in the old days. 50 years later we continue to present to you some of the finest jazz musicians on each side of the Atlantic. This time around the American-Scandinavian summit meeting is supported by the swinging yet sensitive drummer Kristian Leth as well as the much acclaimed virtuoso bass player Jesper Lundgaard.

It is with tremendous pleasure that we welcome the incredible Grammy® Award winning American trumpeter Brian Lynch for his first engagement here at the Montmartre. Later he played with latin jazz star Eddie Palmieri and Buena Vista Social Club alumnus Barbarito Torres and even worked with pop luminaries such as Prince, Maxwell and Sheila E.  Today he concentrates mostly on his own projects and we can look forward to three exciting nights with him in the company of an all-star cast of Danish musicians and Montmartre regulars.

AUGUST 31st - SEPTEMBER 2nd 2010 at 20.00 o'clock (8pm)

RETURN ENGAGEMENT:
“Waltz For Debby” (SINNE EEG / LARS JANSSON)
Celebrating Monica Zetterlund & Bill Evans

Sinne Eeg, vocals (DK)
Lars Jansson, piano (SE)
Jesper Bodilsen, bass (DK)
Morten Lund, drums (DK)

Due to strong demand these concerts sold out very quickly in May 2010, but booking is now open for three extra shows.

In 1964 Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund (1937-2005) and American pianist Bill Evans (1929-1980) recorded their masterpiece album “Waltz For Debby”. Zetterlund must have sparked an unusual inspiration in Evans, as he hardly ever agreed to collaborate with other artists (only very few and very exceptional projects, such as the Miles Davis album “Kind of Blue”, have been blessed with the piano giant’s participation). Zetterlund was a pioneer. Already in the 1950s she became the first Scandinavian jazz singer to have a serious international career, offering a different approach to jazz singing than her American peers, and working with luminaries such as Louis Armstrong, Stan Getz and Quincy Jones. She has described the critically acclaimed album “Waltz For Debby” with Bill Evans as her best album ever and the one she was the most proud of. Jazzhus Montmartre is thrilled to present an three day celebration of our dearly beloved regional jazz vocal role model and her ultimate album - featuring some of today’s most acclaimed and exciting Scandinavian jazz artists: Sinne Eeg (vocals), Lars Jansson (piano), Jesper Bodilsen (bass) & Morten Lund (drums).
