Lars Jansson Trio

  • Lars Jansson (piano / SE)
  • Linda Pettersson (vocal / SE)
  • Thomas Fonnesbæk (bass / DK)
  • Paul Svanberg (drums / SE)

Lars Jansson is perhaps the best songwriter in Scandinavian jazz. Very few like him can write melodies in a contemporary style that captures the listener.

Lars Jansson is an incredibly gifted pianist who throughout the years has been the first choice for many of our best singers from Cæcilie Norby to Sinne Eeg.

Now he presents to us another of his favorite singers, Swedish Linda Pettersson, known as one of the few singers with the same nerve and intensity as Monica Zetterlund.

On these two evenings she will be singing mainly Lars Jansson's songs as well as a selection of the classic standards.

The stage is set for a beautiful and intense experience with four of Scandinavia's best musicians. Scandinavian Winter Jazz at its' best.

JAZZ 'N' STORIES:
MONTMARTRE NØRREGADE IN MEMORY

Jørgen Emborg, piano

Niels Christensen, former Music Director, Montmartre Nørregade

  • Jørgen Emborg (piano / DK)
  • Jan zum Vohrde (sax + flute / DK)
  • Jesper Lundgård (bass / DK)
  • Aage Tanggaard (drums / DK)

Based on the book "Montmartre i Nørregade - Mig og Monten" (Montmartre in Nørregade – Me and the Mont) the author and former music director of Montmartre in Nørregade, Niels Christensen, tells about the golden years from 1976 to 1989.

Come and hear the entertaining, informative and untold stories about the big stars that played there, the night disco, the more than exciting everyday life, and the bumpy road from jazz to fusion to funk, rock, pop and all the music that came alive on the stage in Nørregade.

On request by many, the Jørgen Emborg Quartet will play the music that made this group one of the leading sounds – the nordic tone - within Danish jazz: "Winter Days", "Do not touch my Rocking Chair" and "Februarkrystaller" are on the set list.

Natholdet (the Night Shift) is an old Montmartre tradition that began in 1962 when Jazzhus Montmartre was awarded its license to stay open beyond midnight.

Throughout the years, many of the finest Danish and foreign musicians, for example, Abdullah Ibrahim, has played with Natholdet in May 1963.

Now the tradition continues. Montmartre will provide space for specially invited guests every Friday from 11:00pm to 02:30pm, each week with new artists.

The after hours jazz party is informal and will be a great place to drop in after dinner in town - or if you just want to experience something really unique. Come and flirt your way through the night.

In his long career he has had several top 10 hits in England and worked closely with Bill Wyman, Count Basie, Muddy Waters and many others. Georgie Fame is a great personality who both knows how to swing and entertain audiences like few other singers can.

This is a very rare chance to experience one of England's greatest singers at close range and with a superb Danish rhythm section led by Denmark's new piano star Jacob Christoffersen.

There will be a party atmosphere and happy days in Montmartre in late February!

THE INCREDIBLE AND REFRESHING NEW AMERICAN SAX SENSATION:
MARCUS STRICKLAND QUARTET

Marcus Strickland, sax

  • Marcus Strickland (saxophone / US)
  • David Bryant (piano / US)
  • Ameen Saleem (bass / US)
  • E.J. Strickland (drums / US)

With a tone described by critics and audiences as lyrical, liquid and luminous and at the same time forceful and exact, Marcus Strickland is turning heads in every club he plays.

He has been named 'Rising Star' by Downbeat Magazine's Critic's Poll in 2010 (tenor sax) and 2008 (soprano sax).

JazzTimes Magazine's Reader's Poll named him 'Best New Artist' in 2006, and as early as 2002 he placed third in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition.

But what really matters to him is the audiences: "I don't want them to walk away with their brains hurting. I don't want them walking away with a calculator trying to figure out what happened. I want them to walk away thinking, wow that was a great hang."

THE INCREDIBLE AMERICAN PIANIST AND HIS TRIO:
JASON MORAN & THE BANDWAGON

Jason Moran, piano

The Bandwagon Trio

  • Jason Moran (piano / US)
  • Tarus Mateen (bass / US)
  • Nasheet Waits (drums / US)

Jason Moran has been named one of the most promising musicians in jazz.

In Denmark, we know him for both his work with his trio The Bandwagon, as well as pianist in Charles Lloyd's group.

Jason Moran has not only a superb technique on the keys, he also combines his great knowledge of the jazz tradition into the future sound of jazz.

These days Jason Moran is touring all the major concert halls in Europe and because Montmartre was one of the absolutely most important clubs in the golden age of jazz in the 60s and 70s, he wanted to experience this for himself and found the time to give this one night only concert during his tour.

The stage is set for a great experience with a true new shining star in jazz together with his highly praised trio The Bandwagon.

THE ITALIAN-BRITISH-SWEDISH TRIO FINALLY IN COPENHAGEN:
TORTO / TAYLOR / JORMIN: TRIANGOLI

Diana Torto, vocal

John Taylor, piano

Anders Jormin, bass

  • Diana Torto (vocal / IT)
  • John Taylor (piano / UK)
  • Anders Jormin (bass / SE)

Triangoli consists of three of Europe's leading and most sought after musicians.

John Taylor is one of Europe's most admired and interesting pianists and in Denmark we know him, for amongst other projects, from his work with Marilyn Mazur, and last time he visited us, he gave a beautiful concert with trumpeter Gerard Presencer.

There is no doubt that Taylor is a true European giant on piano.

Together with the unique Italian singer Diana Torto and Sweden's great bassist Anders Jormin he has now formed the trio Triangoli, creating incredibly beautiful musical moments as we know it from ECM's golden era.

Triangoli performs mostly their own music, which will give us as the listener a thrilling experience if you consider the status of each of the members on the contemporary European jazz scene.

EXCLUSIVE INTIMATE CONCERT WITH THE LEGENDARY JAZZ DIVA:
ELIANE ELIAS

Eliane Elias, vocal & piano

  • Eliane Elias (piano + vocal / BR)
  • Marc Johnson (bass / US)
  • Rafael Barata (drums / BR)

Eliane Elias is among the greatest living stars in jazz, and we are proud to present her in a rare intimate concert at Jazzhus Montmartre.

Last time she visited Copenhagen she performed at the Royal Theater.

It is therefore a very special honour and quite exceptional that she will perform at Montmartre for two evenings.

Over the past 25 years Eliane Elias has developed her own style which is outside a category, and she is loved and admired by audiences wherever she plays.

With her amazing stage charisma, brilliant piano playing and beautiful vocals, she always gives the audience a unique experience.

Her latest album release "Light My Fire" consists of compositions of Brazil's greatest composers mixed together with her own beautiful songs.

Very few others mix Brazilian music with jazz like Eliane Elias. It is beautiful, endearing and engaging.

Performing with her, will be Marc Johnson who is one of jazz's great bassists and the young Brazilian drummer Rafael Barata.

Anders Bergcrantz is among the absolute elite of international trumpet players.

We are privileged to have him so close to Copenhagen and a regular guest on the Danish jazz scene as he is only a ride away across the bridge to Sweden.

Few Scandinavian musicians enjoy the status Bergcrantz has achieved as a frequently used soloist all over the world.

On these two nights Bergcrantz introduces us to his international quartet with one of Sweden's fine young pianists, Robert Tjäderquist, and two heavy-weights in jazz, Adam Nussbaum and Jesper Lundgaard, both known worldwide for their recordings with icons such as Hank Jones, Chet Baker, John Scofield and Dave Liebmann.

A CELEBRATION OF A 40 YEAR UNIQUE MUSICAL CLASS FRIENDSHIP:
PALLE MIKKELBORG & THOMAS CLAUSEN DUO

Palle Mikkelborg, trumpet

Thomas Clausen, piano

The remarkable duo album "Even Closer"

  • Palle Mikkelborg (trumpet/ DK)
  • Thomas Clausen (piano / DK)

The friendship between Palle Mikkelborg and Thomas Clausen goes back more than 40 years.

They have collaborated numerous times on some of Danish jazz's most legendary projects, perhaps most notably on Miles Davis' Aura and in the seminal Danish fusion orchestra, Entrance, who reunited for Montmartre's one-year anniversary in May 2011.

They share an incredible heartfelt expression, and perhaps to some a certain Nordic melancholy. But they are also two very unique artists, having separately explored different areas of music over the past decades.

In 2011, they teamed up once again to record the intimate duo album Even Closer, a tranquil mix of time-honoured standards and daring improvisations.

The result, combining Mikkelborg's crisp, airy soundscapes and Clausen's intricate and thoughtful lyricism, is a beautiful and intensely moving experience

STEFAN PASBORG / CARSTEN DAHL DUO

Carsten Dahl, piano

Stefan Pasborg, drums

  • Carsten Dahl (piano/ DK)
  • Stefan Pasborg (drums/ DK)

Two of Denmark's most prominent musicians recently returned from a much anticipated duo-recording session at the well-known Rainbow Studio in Oslo.

They have both manifested themselves as strong personalities on the music scene, not only in Denmark, but also abroad.

With a rich appetite for exploring, Pasborg brings his potent yet highly sensitive drumming, while Dahl demonstrates his superior technique and musicality on keys.

Together they move the music seamlessly in the open space of jazz incorporating swing, bebop, cool and free improvisations.

A unique chance to hear two of Europe's sound breaking musicians in the demanding duo format.

BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES OF TANGO:
PABLO ZIEGLER TRIO
CELEBRATING ASTOR PIAZOLLA

Pablo Ziegler, piano

Celebrating Astor Piazolla

  • Pablo Ziegler (piano / AR)
  • Quique Sinesi (guitar / AR)
  • Walter Castro (bandeneon / AR)

Pablo Ziegler is the foremost improviser in modern tango.

Very few others have succeeded in blending tango and jazz like Pablo Ziegler who is also world famous for playing for 8 years with Astor Piazzolla's quintet.

With his own trio project he won the Latin Grammy in 2005 for best tango album, 'Bajo Cero', recorded with guitarist Quique Sinesi and bandoneon virtuoso Walter Castro.

With his follow-up live album project, 'Buenos Aires Report' (2007) he once again pushed the boundaries for Tango Nuevo and proved how his instrument – the piano – can still expand with mystery and charm.

Now he is visiting Copenhagen again and we are very proud that this time the Pablo Ziegler Trio will play at Jazzhus Montmartre.

Latin passion, charm and melancholy – with a blend of jazz – from the heart of Argentina at the most intimate jazz club in Copenhagen.

World Class Tango.
