Celebrating NHØP

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Bo Stief (Bass / DK)Hans Ulrik (Tenor Sax / DK)Henrik Gunde (Piano / DK)Alex Riel (Drums / DK)

National Danish acoustic bass-icon Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (NHØP) left our world way too soon in 2005. As tradition goes, this evening four musicians show their deep respect and pay their homage to this great innovator.

Bo Stief has been a close ear and eyewitness to NHØP's life, mainly because the two friends had large parts of their musical upbringing at Montmartre. Stief talks about his experiences with NHØP, and the music played will be related to these stories. Stief will be accompanied by three great Danish musicians; Hans Ulrik, Henrik Gunde and the drummer, who has been touring endlessly with NHØP, Alex Riel.

The group enters NHØP’s musical universe and gives us their interpretations of his musical output. We will witness a glorious journey in music, where US-jazz walks hand in hand with traditional Danish songs. And through the entire concert, the spirit of NHØP and his enormous position in Danish jazz will be present.

Danmarks nationale jazz-ikon bassisten Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen forlod alt for tidligt vores verden i 2005.

Ionata/Moroni/Bodilsen/Andersen

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Max Ionata (Tenor Sax / IT)Dado Moroni (Piano / IT)Jesper Bodilsen (Bass / DK)Martin Andersen (Drums / DK)

One of the great European north/south collaborations in jazz can be found in this distinguished quartet. Two Danes and two Italians: four musicians who joins together with love and honesty in a musically extremely successful project. Here the authenticity of the countries' uniqueness is preserved. Both the musicians and the audience are challenged and delighted with the endless possibilities that comes, as long as you let the music decide.

Stylistically, the music is difficult to classify, because all four musicians each play with their own personality and desire to take the lead. But do not expect a war on the stage - rather look forward to a blissful musical experience with a happy common outcome.

Dreamcatcher 3.0 feat. Mathias Heise

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Per Gade (Guitar / DK)Mathias Heise (Keys/Harmonica / DK)Peter Hansen (Bass / DK)Rasmus Lund (Drums / DK)

Dreamcatcher was originally formed 25 years ago with Jørgen Emborg behind the piano. The group re-emerged in 2019 with the two new members Mathias Heise and Rasmus Lund. Heise’s phenomenal playing adds an extra dimension to the band’s melodic fusion of funk, jazz, latin and rock. Rasmus Lund is an extremely popular drummer characterized by his versality and appears therefore in many different musical constellations.

Dreamcatcher additionally consists of Per Gade who has been a regular member of DR’s Bigband during the past several years and has played and toured most of the world with the legendary drummer Billy Cobham. The other founder, bassist Peter Hansen, has been a regular member in Jørgen Emborg’s ensembles and is furthermore the composer of most of Dreamcatcher’s songs. The group has just finished a new album, which is expected to be released in the spring of 2021.

Mathias Heise Quartet: From Toots to Infinity

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Mathias Heise (Harmonica / DK)Pelle Von Bülow (Guitar / DK)Thomas Fonnesbæk (Bass / DK)Zoltán Csörsz (Drums / SE)

Toots Thielemans has set massive footsteps in jazz history with his unique approach to the chromatic harmonica. On his own he managed to unite this peculiar instrument with bebop and modern jazz and thus became one of jazz's legends. Mathias Heise is an award-winning Danish harmonica player who has won the World Cup in chromatic jazz harmonica and is seen by many as Toots' successor.

On this evening, in the company of an eminent team of musicians, he will take up the mantle of the famous Belgian and at the same time show new and exciting roads for this particular instrument. The repertoire will feature both Toots' big hits, but also exciting, original compositions.

In addition to mastering the chromatic harmonica, 27-year-old Mathias Heise is an outstandingly skilled composer and pianist, and he surrounds himself with a skilled fusion-team consisting of peers and equally brilliant musicians who play a fusion of funk, rock and jazz. Mathæus Bech

Mathæus Bech (Bass / DK)August Korsgaard (Keys / DK)Siv Øyunn (Drums / NO)

At the age of 13, Mathæus Bech experienced a concert with Palle Mikkelborg's Aura that would change his life. From that point on, there was no doubt; he wanted to be a musician. 12 years later he is now celebrating that his dream really did come true, with his debut album “Optimist”, which reflects upon the journey from childhood dream to reality.

He unites his love for jazz, folk and classical music and blurs the lines between the genres in an empathetic and bright manner. He strives towards continuing the proud Danish tradition of virtuosic bass soloists and wants to show a new generation of music lovers, that the double bass also does well at the front of the stage.

Bjarke Falgren Quartet

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Bjarke Falgren (Violin / DK)Henrik Halberg (Guitar / DK)Morten Lundsby (Bass / DK)Janus Templeton (Drums / DK)

Denmark has a kind of patent on fine jazz violinists: Svend Asmussen was the first. Then followed by Kristian Jørgensen, Mads Tolling and also this evening's main character, Bjarke Falgren. With an uncontrollable musicality, a fine sense of playing the right notes at the right time and a distinguished ability to refine and integrate his playing in all contexts, Falgren is something completely out of the ordinary. Falgren plays with everyone around the world. He composes music for films and TV series, and then he has this quartet that picks up colors from the entire palette: jazz, classical, Brazilian, and not least folk music.

With his irresistible swing, Bjarke Falgren stands out as something very special in contemporary Danish jazz music. He deservedly received the very first "The Ellen & Svend Asmussen Prize" in 2017. Look forward to enjoying a great musician at one of his rare concerts on Danish soil.

Siden fulgte bl.a.

Mikkel Ploug Solo + Nikolaj Hess Solo

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Mikkel Ploug (Guitar / DK)Nikolaj Hess (Piano / DK)

An evening that offers two very authentic Danish solo performers, playing each their instrument with their own musical personality.

Guitarist Mikkel Ploug is a dynamic musician in rapid development. His playing moves effortlessly in between genres with a strong focus on preserving the groove and the melodic originality of the music. During Denmark's first COVID-19 shutdown, Mikkel Ploug played 28 nights in a row from his balcony - both for neighbors and fans who listened from all over the world. The lullabies and evening songs in new guitar solo arrangements are gathered on the album "Balcony Lullabies", and this evening Ploug moves from the balcony to Montmartre’s stage.

The pianist Nikolaj Hess is one of the most original figures in Danish jazz. He is constantly looking for new ways of expression and has a constant retention of the music's strong rhythm. With the project "Impressions of Bob Dylan Revisited", Hess tackles songwriter Bob Dylan's rich archive of fantastic songs, which he gives completely new life through his ability to maintain and constantly offer new suggestions for variations on the well-known and beloved songs.

Cathrine Legardh (Vocal / DK)Jacob Christoffersen (Piano / DK)Jesper Thorn (Bass / DK)

Among the country's many fine singers, Cathrine Legardh marks herself as one of the very versatile and brave. She has released children's records, played jazz standards and has on the release "En Sång I En Dröm" dared to give her interpretations - in the original language - of the Swedish icon Monica Zetterlund. And the result is nothing short of breathtaking! Not only does Legardh manage to capture and pass on the magic that was always in Zetterlund's phrasings, she also adds her own sweetness and vocal charm to the songs.

Here she is accompanied by one of the country's highly skilled vocal accompanists, Jacob Christoffersen, and the bassist with the great tone and confident intonation, Jesper Thorn. Among many songs, we can look forward to enjoying “Jag vet en dejlig ros”, “Sakta vi går genom stan”, “Monicas vals” and many more. Come join the celebration of one of Scandinavia's great jazz icons, led by one of Scandinavia's truly notable jazz singers.

Celebrating Svend: Ellen & Svend Asmussen Prize

Jacob Fischer (Guitar / DK)Bjarke Falgren (Violin / DK)Jan Lundgren (Piano / SE)Yasser Pino (Bass / CU)Andreas Svendsen (Drums / DK)

The Ellen & Svend Asmussen Prize is given to an artist selected in the spirit of Svend Asmussen. Since the 1930s, the violinist Svend Asmussen (1916-2017) was an incredibly prominent figure in Danish and international jazz. Throughout his great career, he has made a huge contribution in the shaping of the Danish jazz scene. Asmussen was an artist who was not afraid of musical challenges, and with his enormous talent he was constantly seeking new frontiers.

This evening he is celebrated by artists who, like Asmussen himself, possess an enormous musical curiosity and an uncontrollable desire to play music. Across different genres, Asmussen's everlasting innovative music will be interpreted, and his musical originality will be celebrated by jazz pioneers of today, hereof two of the earlier prizewinners: Jan Lundgren in 2019 and Bjarke Falgren in 2017. The prize is awarded by Svend Asmussen's widow, Ellen Bick Asmussen.

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Lars Møller (Tenor Sax / DK)Thor Madsen (Guitar / DK)Jonas Johansen (Drums / DK)

Here we find three musicians who all occupy significant places in the Danish jazz hierarchy. Three individualists in an inspiring collaboration, where they interpret standards as well as their own compositions.

Tenor saxophonist, composer, and conductor Lars Møller already emerged as a teenager with a clearly defined musical personality. Since then, he has developed it to something close to perfection, and he is internationally recognized as a musician and especially as a composer.

The guitarist, Thor Madsen, masters his instrument with a strong sense of putting the perfect harmonic sounds into the interplay, and this playing is wonderfully welcoming and all-embracing.

Over the years, Jonas Johansen's drumming has been in great demand in Denmark as well as internationally. He was NHØP's favorite drummer and played for several years with Eliane Elias. Johansen masters all styles of jazz and is perhaps one of the most qualified Danish drummers to express South American music.

Helle Henning's beautiful compositions and always rich texts are in a class of their own. She has always delivered and will always deliver. It is therefore always a pleasure to follow the development in her music, which will continue to enrich us with distinguished listening experiences. Wollesen is on stage, and Nikolaj Hess and Daniel Franck complete the group that will embrace our ear canals on this beautiful summer evening.
