VILLAUME / BODILSEN / LUND

Kasper Villaume (piano / DK)Jesper Bodilsen (bass / DK)Morten Lund (drums / DK)

Kasper Villaume is one of Denmark's most refined pianists, and his work with people such as Chris Potter and Jeff “Tain” Watts has been highly praised. On this night, he brings his own trio to showcase the pinnacle of Danish jazz.

Fredrik Kronkvist (alto sax / SE)Jason Marsalis (drums / US)Martin Sjöstedt (bass / SE)Daniel Fredriksson (drums / SE)

Fredrik Kronvist is a superb alto player worthy of tackling the wonderful Thenolius Monk repertoire, which he does on a new album, “Monk Vibes”, with Jason Marsalis of the legendary Marsalis family. They are joined by one of Sweden's finest rhythm groups.

DADO MORONI / MAX IONATA: ”TWO FOR STEVIE”

Max Ionata (sax / IT)Dado Moroni (piano / IT)

Italians Dado Moroni and Max Ionata know how to make music history come alive: Jazz or not, they imbue the music with taste and Italian playfulness. On their latest album they pay tribute to Steve Wonder, proving just how much jazz and pop still have in common.

DEXTER GORDON NIGHT FEAT. MAX IONATA

Max Ionata (sax / IT)Dado Moroni (piano / IT)Jesper Lundgaard (bass / DK)Alex Riel (drums / DK)

Dexter Gordon is one of the immortals of jazz, and Montmartre owes him a lot for his time in Denmark. On this night, we pay tribute to him in the company of the masterful Italian sax man, Max Ionata, Dado Moroni, Jesper Lundgaard and Dexter's own drummer, the legendary Alex Riel.

ALEX RIEL TRIO FEAT. DADO MORONI

Dado Moroni (piano / IT)Jesper Lundgaard (bass / DK)Alex Riel (drums / DK)

Alex Riel is the heart and soul of Montmartre, and of Danish jazz in general, a legend that has inspired countless musicians around the globe. Along with the Italian piano virtuoso Dado Moroni and the master bassist Jesper Lundgaard, Alex shows why he is still considered one of the most important drummers of all time.

Lee Pearson (drums / US)Micah Smith (vocals / US)Jacob Christoffersen (piano / DK)Samir Moulay (guitar / US)Thomas Fonnesbæk (bass / DK)

Lee Pearson belongs in the absolute drumming elite at the moment, as is witnessed by his work with Kenny Barron, Hank Jones, Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, and others. He has chosen to record his first album as a leader in Montmartre with some of his favorite musicians.

ROSA PASSOS QUARTET

“Close-up” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Rosa Passos (vocals & guitar / BR)Fabio Torres (piano / BR)Paulo Paulelli (bass / BR)Celso de Almeida (drums / BR)

Rosa Passos in an icon of Brazilian music. She sings and plays a beautiful, inciting, and charming bossa nova quite unlike anything else. She visits Europe for the first time in almost ten years, drawn by the special place that Copenhagen has in her heart. Surely a Montmartre milestone. The concert is being presented in collaboration with The Culture Yard, Helsingør.

JUSTIN KAUFLIN TRIO

© SpectraFoto© SpectraFoto
Justin Kauflin (piano / US)Thomas Fonnesbæk (bass / DK)Billy Williams (drums / US)

Justin Kauflin is making his mark on the international jazz scene at the moment. He learns a tune from a single listening while also spellbinding the audience with his unique sensibility. No surprise that Quincy Jones has taken him in, producing a documentary on his life and early blindness as well as his debut album, which is climbing the jazz charts as we speak.

JUSTIN KAUFLIN: TRIBUTE TO CLARK TERRY

Henrik Bolberg (trumpet / DK)Justin Kauflin (piano / US)Thomas Fonnesbæk (bass / DK)Billy Williams (drums / US)

Clark Terry, who passed away recently, was one of jazz' greatest personalities, a showman and a unique musician as well as a mentor for several important people, including Quincy Jones, Wynton Marsalis and Justin Kauflin. On this night, the latter pays tribute to his old mentor, along with virtuoso trumpeter Henrik Bolberg.

JØRGEN EMBORG 4'TET: SONG FOR TOOTS FEAT. MATHIAS HEISE

Jørgen Emborg (piano / DK)Mathias Heise (harmonica / DK)Peter Hansen (bass / DK)Karsten Bagge (drums / DK)

Jørgen Emborg has shaped Danish jazz with his skills as a pianist as well as with his wonderful compositions. We are happy to have him present a new star of Danish jazz, 21-year-old Mathias Heise, a world champion of chromatic harmonica following in the footsteps of the great Toots Thielemans.

RUSSO & VILENSKY – CELLO MEETS BANDONEON

Paolo Russo (bandoneon / IT)Ruslan Vilensky (cello / LV)

Montmartre stages a unique virtuoso encounter between cellist Ruslan Vilensky and bandoneonist, pianist, and composer Paolo Russo. They will play Paolo's compositions as well as tunes by Astor Piazzolla, arranged especially for cello and bandoneon. While not jazz in the traditional sense, their music retains its dynamic, improvised presence.

Violinist Bjarke Falgren leads Hot 'n' Spicy, an eminent modern version of the beloved string trio. Along with Norway's most swinging backing group, they present latin-inflected jazz with a tasteful hint of pop, which is sure to bring a smile to anyone's face.

Hans Ulrik (tenor / DK)Jacob Christoffersen (piano / DK)Kaspar Vadsholt (bass / DK)Anders Mogensen (drums / DK)

Hans Ulrik unites Nordic lyricism and American swing in a way that has defined much of modern Danish jazz. An obvious choice for this International Jazz Day. With his quartet, he will play tunes by his own tenor heroes, such as John Coltrane and Stanley Turrentine, as well as a couple of Danish melodies.

Robert Lakatos is a musical genius who has earned his place among Europe's greatest jazz musicians, along the lines of Stefano Bollani or Carsten Dahl. He returns to Montmartre backed by a superb American rhythm duo.

Katrine Krog Russo (Vocal / DK)Paolo Russo (Bandoneon & Piano / IT)Thommy Andersson (bass / SE)

Katrine Krog Russo writes songs with strong roots in the Danish folk-tradition, simple melodies supporting and strengthening the stories told - from the heart, with no filter and in Danish. Working with the fabulous bass player Thommy Andersson and her partner in life and music, the bandoneonist and piano player Paolo Russo, the songs come to life in a musical experience that reaches in and out. Montmartre is pleased to welcome this trio for the celebration of the album release "Katrine - sange tæt på", which is included in the entrance fee.

Jan Harbeck Quintet feat. Walter Smith III

Jan Harbeck (tenor / DK)Walter Smith III (tenor / US)Henrik Gunde (piano / DK)Eske Nørrelykke (bass / DK)Anders Holm (drums / DK)

Jan Harbeck keeps the Danish swing tradition alive with his sublime quartet, which is almost tailored for the genre. On his latest album, he explores the classic tenor duel with American rising star Walter Smith III. He brings this music to Montmartre for two intimate and acoustic concerts.

DIDIER LOCKWOOD RECORDING: LIVE AT MONTMARTRE

Didier Lockwood is France's most respected jazz violinist. He keeps his country's tradition on the instrument alive while constantly renewing it with novel influences. For this live recording at Montmartre, he is backed by some of Europe's most eminent musicians and the legendary Billy Hart on drums.

Didier Lockwood er måske Frankrigs mest indflydelsesrige jazzmusiker i nyere tid.

Just like Wynton Marsalis evolved as a musician under the tutelage of Art Blakey, he himself has mentored countless young talents during his career. On these nights, one of them, the accomplished pianist Eric Reed, visits Montmartre in order to carry on the torch, mentoring the two young Danish talents, Matthias Petri and Andreas Svendsen, who are sure to shape Danish jazz in the years to come.
