Frederik Moth (Saxophone / DK)David Besiakov (Drums / DK)Lars Fiil (Piano / DK)Mads Nørgaard (Guitar / DK)Jasper Jagd (Bass / DK)

The members of this group are young and active in the Danish jazz community, with strong musical personalities, all of whom are band leaders on their own projects. The compositions are written by Fredrik Moth, but the music is created jointly with room for the individual's voice. The quintet released their first record in 2015 which was very well received by the press: ”(…) All formulated through the really well-written songs that the five musicians relate to. This is not a jam, not at all, it is inspired collaboration where musical wholeness is the goal. It's 8-0 at the break. The tunes catch on. And it swings”. - Henrik Woldsgaard, Jazzspecial. "It Could be Nina" appears solid, well balanced and well thought out, and "The Nameless" is a fine chiseled highlight with the saxophone in a distinguished front position. "- Ivan Rod (Gaffa). Now the group is out with their second album: "Take The B - Train" which we have the pleasure of listening to this evening!

Melodierne fanger. Og det swinger”. - Henrik Woldsgaard, Jazzspecial. ”It Could be Nina” fremstår helstøbt, velafbalanceret og gennemtænkt, og ”Den navnløse” er et fint ciseleret højdepunkt med saxofonen i en fornem frontposition.” – Ivan Rod (Gaffa). Rasmus Oppenhagen Krogh (Guitar / DK)Adi Zukanovic (Keys / DK)Anders (Bass / DK)Jakob Høyer (Drums / DK)

While the upcoming album features a group of seven musicians, this concert will showcase the music in a smaller group with room to explore new facets of the material.

The Canadian/English trumpet player, composer and trendsetter Kenny Wheeler is celebrated these two evenings. He became an icon in his extremely active years, where he was part of creating and developing the special “ECM-sound” – named after the record company. Here, focus was on the sound, the serenity, the breaks and not the least on the compositional element. These concerts may prove to be iconic. Not just because of the contributing musicians all belonging to the respectively English, Finnish and Danish elite of jazz, but also because the group is visited by the English singer Norma Winstone, who worked together with Kenny Wheeler in a period of years. She can without any doubt pass on the special melancholic and heartfelt feeling that was one of Wheeler’s distinguishing characteristics. Enjoy the beautiful melody lines and the enriching serenity in the music.

Viktoria Tolstoy: Stations

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Victoria Tolstoy (Vocal / SE)Krister Jonsson (Guitar / SE)Joel Lyssarides (Piano / SE)Mattias Svensson (Bass / SE)Rasmus Kihlberg (Drums / SE)

International media characterizes Viktoria Tolstoy’s voice as “crystal clear” and “unpretentious and natural”, and the Swedish singer has also succeeded in manifesting herself as one of the most successful jazz singers in Scandinavia since her debut release in 1996. The new album “Stations” from 2020 is based on her own life story and deals with her strong connection to the home country Sweden and her search for her Russian heritage. Tolstoy elegantly balances genres as jazz, pop, and folk music in an emotional – at times melodramatic – musical universe. Accompanied by her regular band and the rising star Joel Lyssarides, she will present a musical repertoire consisting of both interpretations of newer Scandinavian music and also classical jazz standards.

Manu Le Prince: Tribute to João Gilberto & Tom Jobim

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Manu Le Prince (Vocal / FR)Julian Le Prince Caetano (Piano / BR)Acelino de Paula (Bass / BR)Zaza Desiderio (Drums / BR)

It’s always interesting to follow the development in music in other countries; especially when the bet is on personal contributions to already established music. The French singer and composer Manu Le Prince is in front of the row when we talk of Brazilian music; whether bossa-nova, samba or newer still-growing forms. Le Prince has experience in fusion music as well as more pop-oriented music, but her current expression approaches the authentic Braz-jazz more and more. Here, she presents, with her own group consisting of Brazilian musicians, a repertoire that celebrates the Brazilian songwriter giants João Gilberto and Tom Jobim.

Jan Kaspersen Quintet

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Jan Kaspersen (Piano / DK)Anders Bergcrantz (Trumpet / SE)Bob Rockwell (Tenor / US)Peter Danstrup (Bass / DK)Ole Rømer (Drums / DK)

Conductor Jan Kaspersen is behind the piano still leading this classic quintet after nearly 40 years of collaboration. A highly respected band of veteran status playing on a level rarely seen in Denmark – or abroad! Anders Bergcrantz and Bob Rockwell are in front as soloist of absolute international class accompanied by Peter Danstrup, Ole Rømer and the conducter himself. It’s music with drive, fantasy and energy. With its immediate raw swingy expression, added a splash of humor now and then, the quintet arranges a vivid and warm musical experience. The group has through more than four decades build up an extraordinary interplay and a repertoire which is still extended with new music mainly written by Kaspersen. There is room for playing in the music, which is inspired by jazz, blues, rock and latin – and don’t be surprised if a couple of Monk-titles or jazz standards slips into the program of the concert.

Sunday, May 17 at 20.00 (8 PM)

Gustaf Ljunggren/Emil De Waal & Svaneborg Kardyb

1. set:

Nikolaj Svaneborg (Würlitzer/Synthesizer/Piano / DK)Jonas Kardyb (Drums/Percussion / DK)

2. set:

Gustaf Ljunggren (Keys/Strings / SE)Emil de Waal (Drums/Perc/Electronics / DK)

This Monten-night features two duos that combine the acoustic and the electronic in minimalistic soundscapes.

Nikolaj Svaneborg and Jonas Kardyb from Aarhus released their debut album “Knob” in March 2019 which made album of the week on P8 Jazz. 2019 has been an exceptional rewarding year for the duo who won “Danish Jazz Composer of the Year” and “New Danish Jazz Name of the Year” at Danish Music Awards Jazz and also ensured victory in Jazzkonkurrencen. The jury emphasized the duos’ brave minimalism and clear artistic strength. The music consists of an airy, spherical expression, where electronic and acoustic sounds are unified and capturing melodies encounter Nordic moods in a dreamy and groovy universe.

Gustaf Ljunggren and Emil de Waal celebrate their 20-year anniversary as duo and have for that occasion recorded a moving album consisting of new, joint music played on acoustic, electric and electronic instruments that definitely will touch, shake, swing and suave the audience. The Danish Music Award-nominated album has been recorded and mixed in New York by Andy Green (Velvet Underground and John Cale). On the basis of a common integrity and curiosity as the crucial factor the duo has played everything from hits from the Danish top-ten to improvised noise concerts in China.

Gypsy Jazz has swept the audiences off their feet since its birth in the 1930’s bubbly Paris. Sizzling solos and lethal speeds on acoustic instruments are the characteristics of the genre. With this constellation of talented, young Danish and Swedish jazz musicians, Jazzkollektivet has gathered a powerful team of interpreters of the popular music. The concert offers traditional methods and a great deal of joyful playing.
