Miroslav Vitous/Emil Viklický: Czech/Moravian Folk Inspira

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Miroslav Vitous (Bass / CZ)Emil Viklický (Piano / CZ)

One of the defining figures in European jazz, Miroslav Vitous, left his native Czechoslovakia to make a profound impact on the New York scene in the 60s, making jazz history as a founding member of the hugely influential Weather Report and in a seminal acoustic trio with Chick Corea and Roy Haynes. He will enter Montmartre's stage for one night together with the award winning pianist and composer Emil Vicklický. Vutuos' sumptuous bass lines shall merge with Vicklický's robust combination of swing and lyrics - "combine elements of Bud Powell and Oscar Peterson with a deep infusion of Moravian soul, and you have Emil Vicklický, the patriarch of Czech jazz piano" - Jack Massarik, Evening Standard.

Jack Massarik fra Evening Standard skriver således om Emil Vicklický: "combine elements of Bud Powell and Oscar Peterson with a deep infusion of Moravian soul, and you have Emil Vicklický, the patriarch of Czech jazz piano"

The new Blanco Y Negro was re-formed in 2015 by initiative of Copenhagen drummer Jonas Johansen. And it soon became clear that it was an extraordinary line-up. Ever since the re-formation the Quintet has been on a mission to create a true personal expression. And the result as for now can be heard on their latest album ”Timbero”. A stunning Latin jazz album full of funkiness, elegance and brilliance. An album that feels like a poetic colorful tale, conveyed by great narrators who have spent their entire lives refining the story of their instrument. Blanco Y Negro is an international ensemble with a global sound and a captivating dynamic. Experience the Quintet firsthand on May 2nd at Jazzhus Montmartre.

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Cristina Branco (Vocal / PT)Luís Figuereido (Piano / PT)Bernardo Couto (Guitar / PT)Bernardo Moreira (Bass / PT)

We are proud to present one of the biggest modern voices in Fado, Cristina Branco. The Portuguese singer has travelled the world thin with her contemporary take on Portuguese folk music. Similar to musical genres such as tango and flamenco, fado is full of passion, and Cristina Branco truly lives and breathes fado’s rich musical history without being put in a box. Her sounds inspired by Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, as well as great American folk singers from the 60s and 70s such as Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell. Cristina Branco will be accompanied by Luís Figuereido on the piano, Bernado Moreira on the bass, and Bernardo Couto on the guitar.

Monten: Mathias Heise Quadrillion

Mathias Heise (Mundharmonika / DK)David Vang (Bass / DK)Mads Christiansen (Guitar / DK)Aksel Stadel Borum (Drums / DK)

Amazing fusion, funk, rock and jazz! That’s how Mathias Heise Quadrillion is best described. On their latest album ”Decadence” the quartet defined a new genre within the jazz scene: FuRoJazz – a contraction of funk, rock and jazz. In FuRoJazz, the quartet found space to experiment and found liberation from the inhibiting conventions and genres. This provided the group with space for unrestrained play with pulse, harmonies and improvisation. With a playful chromatic harmonica that revolves around the catchy compositions, Mathias Heise Quadrillion has managed to appeal to both young crossover fans and hardcore jazz fusion nerds. In other words, we’re in for an evening where the elegance of the jazz and the hard-knocking primal rhythms of funk and rock is merged together perfectly by an ebullient setup of four highly talented musicians.

FOLK at Montmartre: Tailcoat

Henriette Flach (Violin / DK)Rasmus Brinck (Nyckelharpa / SE)Villads Hoffmann (Cittern / DK)Emil Nielsen (Bass / DK)Mårten Hillbom (Percussion / SE)

You could easily call Tailcoat a kind of youth all-star band. Five of the most promising talents from both sides of the Bridge have teamed up in this tour-de-force of an orchestra. The old dusty quilt of stale traditions is ripped up; clean cuts have been made; the qualities of these five fine musicians have been weaved together in an elegant and seamless expression that combines the classic qualties of nordic acoustic music with something entirely new and exciting.

John Scofield (US): Intimkoncert

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
John Scofield (Guitar / US)Gerald Clayton (Organ/Piano / US)Vincente Archer (Bass / US)Bill Stewart (Drums / US)

One of the greatest innovators of modern jazz guitar and a three-time Grammy award-winning artist, John Scofield, is coming to Montmartre.

In 2016, the guitar legend went into a new conceptual territory, bringing his lifelong love of American Country music out of his toolbox to share with his jazz audiences. In his “Country for Old Men” recording, which won two Grammy awards, Scofield redesigns classic country melodies, performing with several of his closest musical associates from the jazz community. In Scofield’s words, “We’re going to turn “outlaw” country tunes into jazz vehicles. Rather than go to Nashville and record with “real” country players in a country style, I’m joining forces with my jazz cronies to play the songs with our jazz approach. We improvise while keeping the integrity, character and twang of this wonderful American music. I’ve always loved Country music and am super excited to put my treatment of them into play.” Scofield and company will sculpt jazz renditions of classic tunes by George Jones, Hank Williams, Patti Page and even Shania Twain to name a few! He will be accompanied by Gerald Clayton on the organ and piano, Vincente Archer on the bass, and Bill Stewart on the drums.

This is a rare opportunity to experience John Scofield up close, in our small and intimate music hall.

NB: It's not possible to book table or dinner for these two concerts.

Jan Harbeck (Tenor Sax / DK)Henrik Gunde (Piano / DK)Eske Nørrelykke (Bass / DK)Anders Holm (Drums / DK)

Jan Harbeck lives and breathes for his music and to tell a story with his saxophone and has demonstrated, that nobody can put their soul into a jazz ballad like he can. He keeps the Danish swing tradition alive with his sublime quartet. Once upon a time we had Ben Webster in Copenhagen to put the soul to life again. Today we have Jan Harbeck. He will be accompanied by Henrik Grunde on the piano, Eske Nørrelykke on the bass, and Anders Holm on the drums.

Lew Tabackin (Tenor Sax/Flute / US)Boris Kozlov (Bass / RU)Mark Taylor (Drums / US)

Lew Tabackin, flutist and tenor saxophonist, is an artist of astonishing vision. His electrifying flute playing is at once virtuosic, primordial, cross-cultural and passionate. His distinctive tenor sax style includes the use of wide intervals, abrupt changes of mood and tempo and purposeful fervour, all in the service of showing the full range of possibilities of his instrument - melodically, rhythmically, and dynamically. Without copying or emulating jazz greats of the past, Mr. Tabackin has absorbed elements into his style, ultimately creating his own sound and aura. Boris Kozlov will accompany him on the bass and Mark Taylor on the drums.

Mark Turner (Tenor Sax / US)Jochen Rueckert (Drums / DE)Lage Lund (Guitar / NO)Orlando le Fleming (Bass / UK)

German drummer Jochen Rueckert will perform at Montmartre together with legendary tenor saxophonist Mark Turner. Jochen Rueckert is a musician who deliberately avoided a formal music education, which results in some very interesting outcomes in his way of playing music. Mark Turner is considered one of the most prominent American saxophonists of the modern generation. His improvisations cover several octaves at once, and they are characterized by rhythmic complexity in its execution. This is what creates Turner’s unique playing style. They will be accompanied by Lage Lund on the guitar and Orlande le Fleming on the bass.

AySay Very few 22-yo can write Roskilde Festival, the VIP opening concert for Aarhus 2017 and guest appearances with Eivør on their CV, but Luna Ersahin is no ordinary 22-yo. This evening Luna will be playing with her band AySay that mixes the traditions from her Danish/Turkish background into a strong personal expression.

Just To (support) Throughout the last couple of years Justine Hald Boesen has taken the train across the country. Crossing over and under the Danish belts with a notebook and a dreaming gaze to meet with Mathæus Bech in Copenhagen, where the two of them have nurtured a blossoming songwriting partnership. With heart, honesty and a kaleidoscopic but deeply rooted songwriting style, they have created a unique style, which you can experience for the first time ever at this debut performance.

Sisters of Jazz celebrate the hidden, successful ladies who are behind the lyrics, the music and arrangement of some of the most played and loved standards in jazz history. Expect to hear covers from artists such as Dorothy Fields, Nancy Hamilton, Marian McPartland and Mary Lou Williams. The constellation Sisters of Jazz was originally put together for a concert in Sweden in 2014 by the Swedish jazz singer and songwriter Anna Pauline. The tribute concert was very well received by the audience and the Swedish press. So much that they decided to form a permanent orchestra, a women’s orchestra, which not only lauded women jazz vocalists, but also female composers and songwriters in jazz.

Good bass players are not in short supply on the Danish Jazz scene. But only a few master and express themselves with the same authority as Niels Wilhelm Knudsen does with a bass. After more than a quarter of a century in different musical contexts, there should be no doubt about the talent that Niels Wilhelm Knudsen possesses, both as a composer and instrumentalist. Three CDs and a fourth LP just around the corner make up an extensive backlist of great tones and wonderful swing sensations, not often heard in today’s younger acoustic jazz. Niels Wilhelm Knudsen’s new quartet with tenor Thomas Hass, pianist Kathrine Windfeld and drummer Michael Dalgas have every opportunity to raise awareness and on this evening, they do so with a celebration of the release of their new LP at Unicorn Jazz’ final concert after nearly 40 year’s activity.

The concerts is presented in collaboration with UNICORN. Ticket price is DKK 100. Only sold at the door.

Billetpris 100 kr. Sælges kun i døren.

UPCOMING: Jakob Sørensen: Bagland

“Upcoming” is Montmartre’s series of talent concerts where upcoming artists test the boundaries of jazz.
Jakob Sørensen (Trumpet / DK)Alex Jønsson (Guitar / DK)Mathias Jæger (Piano / DK)Frederik Sakham (Bass / DK)Frej Lesner (Drums / DK)

Bagland is a quintet consisting of five musicians, who all have their roots based in the Scandinavian sound. The music is inspired by the deserted and open nordic landscape. Lyrical and melancholic melodies characterize the compositions and the sound is clean and fragile with obvious references to the Nordic sound. Their debut album has been praised by critics and the follow up was a big part of Jakob winning the DPA Award “Jazz Artist of the Year”, 2017.

Tickets only available at the door. Tickets is DKK 100 each and only DKK 50 for students/under 26.

Billetter købes kun i døren. Normalpris 100 kr. og 50 kr. for studerende/unge under 26

Tribute to NHØP

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Hans Ulrik (Tenor Sax / DK)Alex Riel (Drums / DK)Bo Stief (Bass / DK)Henrik Gunde (Piano / DK)

This evening is dedicated to Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, where four of Denmark's best jazz musicians have joined forces to play music in his spirit. Alex Riel played with NHØP throughout his career and together they were called "The Great Danes". Now, Riel and Bo Stief celebrate their good friend and colleague together with the two younger musicians, Hans Ulrik and Henrik Gunde, who in their own way carry the musical legacy of NHØP. Besides being a jazz experience at its best, this evening creates a room for anecdotes about NHØP who took everybody by storm with his formidable technique when he unconditionally stood in the service of music.
