Cancelled: Artved-Vincentz Quartet

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Jacob Artved (Guitar / DK)Niels Vincentz (Sax / DK)Anders 'AC' Christensen (Bass / DK)billy Hart (Drums / US)

This night is a gathering of one and a half Danish jazz generation, and a real American jazz icon. They gather at an exclusive concert that pays tribute to the strongest musical expression of the 20th century - jazz in the form of hardbop! Hardbop is the part of jazz that grew big and strong up through the 1950s. It is jazz with body, soul and power. But above all it is jazz that - when it reaches the highest notes - will bring out the great joy and a strong desire in the musicians as well as the audience. The three Danish musicians master the expression, and there is a rock-solid guarantee that the intuitive and ultra-dynamic drummer Billy Hart, will keep the pot boiling from the first beat to the last.

Enrico Pieranunzi (Piano / IT)Thomas Fonnesbæk (Bass / DK)André Ceccarelli (Drums / FR)

This new established trio will make their grant debut in front of a Danish audience performing at Jazzhus Montmartre. The trio brings together three European jazz giants from three different European countries: the piano player Enrico Pieranunzi, probably one of the most admired Italian jazz musicians, the drummer André Ceccarelli, a true icon of French jazz, and the always flawless Danish bass player Thomas Fonnesbæk. Imagination, feeling and interplay are the three key words that make this trio an extraordinary unit of spectacular creativity and impact. This is indeed a trio you do not want to miss.

RESCHULED TO 25 MARCH

The Danish singer Mette Juul does not make it harder and more complicated than it is. There is a liberating calm in her vocal, whether she sings standards or presents her own very beautiful and melodic songs.

As a listener you are captured by Mette Juul's honest communication of the deeply personal lyrics, sat to beautiful melodies. She is developing from release to release, from concert to concert, and has earned a place at the very top of Scandinavian song soloists. The musical trio backing Juul does simply not come any better and will surround Juuls vocal in a beautiful harmonic blanket.

Cancelled: Fabrizio Bosso with Jesper Bodilsen Trio

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Fabrizio Bosso (Trumpet / IT)Magnus Hjorth (Piano / DK)Jesper Bodilsen (Bass / DK)Martin Andersen (Drums / DK)

Many Danish jazz musicians have international careers and excite jazz listeners all around the world. Bassist Jesper Bodilsen has been an established musician in Italy for many years, and drummer Martin Andersen almost consider Spain as his second home. The excellent Italian trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso is one of the star musicians, who uses the two Danish musicians at concerts in Italy. Just like his compatriot and instrument colleague, Enrico Rava, Bosso focuses on the melodic in his playing. His ability to compose the most beautiful and often surprising musical lines is breathtaking, and his tone choices and laid-back style evokes memories of a sleepy Italian village. If you close your eyes and listen to the music, you are suddenly sitting in the shade drinking a glass of local wine, while the sun calmly sets behind the mountain tops. This concert is the only opportunity to experience Fabrizio Bosso in Denmark this time around.

Mange danske jazzmusikere har internationale karrierer og begejstrer jazzlyttere verden over.

Rescheduled: Nils Landgren/Jan Lundgren: Kristallen

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Nils Landgren (Trombone/Vocal / SE)Jan Lundgren (Piano / SE)

RESCHEDULED TO 8-9/APRIL

These two musicians are among Sweden's finest jazz artists. The trombone player and singer Nils Landgren is primarily known for his funky tunes, and beautiful vocal on his many soul/jazz releases. The pianist Jan Lundgren is at the very top of the list of heirs to Jan Johansson's piano throne, which has been empty since the legend Johansson passed away back in 1968.

The experienced listener will argue that this is an almost impossible genre mix. But it is exactly the differences of these two musicians, that is the element of wonder. The deep respect they have for each other encourages a musical output that works almost perfectly. We can expect both dew-fresh versions of Swedish folk melodies and compositions by Keith Jarrett, Abdullah Ibrahim and Leonard Bernstein. Everything is performed superbly and captivatingly by the two musicians.

Klara Kristin's debut album "Lullaby & Drum Machine" is packed with iconic French song gems from the 60's and 70's, and will without question make any Francophile heart melt. With her seductive and velvety smooth voice, Klara Kristin pays homage to French culture and the Nouvelle Vague, when she interprets Brigitte Bardot, Francoise Hardy and Serge Gainsbourg with an almost supernatural elegance.

The album is produced by Jonathan Bremer from the well-known duo Bremer/McCoy and jazz guitarist Johannes Wamberg. The lineup also includes a selection of some of Denmark's best young jazz musicians; Oilly Wallace, Andreas Svendsen and Zier Romme.

Rasmus Oppenhagen Krogh: Whereabouts

“Upcoming” is Montmartre’s series of talent concerts where upcoming artists test the boundaries of jazz.
Rasmus Oppenhagen Krogh (Guitar / DK)Adi Zukanovic (Keys / DK)Nils 'Bosse' Davidsen (Bass / DK)Jakob Høyer (Drums / DK)

This evening guitarist Rasmus Oppenhagen Krogh presents his latest project "Whereabouts". The project has been on the way for the past few years and culminated with the album of the same name, released in the autumn of 2020. The album marks Krogh's second solo release after the highly acclaimed debut album "Distil" from 2017. "Whereabouts” explores the intersection between composition/improvisation and simplicity/complexity and the relationship between time and space. The guitar playing floats with great elegance on top of the other instruments, and the improvisations drift through the room with a warmth from the strings of the guitar. The new album "Whereabouts" counts a team of seven musicians, but the music this evening will be presented in a smaller quartet format, with room to explore new corners of the material.

Guitarist Rasmus Oppenhagen Krogh præsenterer denne aften sit seneste projekt ”Whereabouts”.

RESCHEDULED TO 24/JUNE

The Ellen & Svend Asmussen Prize is given to an artist selected in the spirit of Svend Asmussen. Since the 1930s, the violinist Svend Asmussen (1916-2017) was an incredibly prominent figure in Danish and international jazz. Throughout his great career, he has made a huge contribution in the shaping of the Danish jazz scene. Asmussen was an artist who was not afraid of musical challenges, and with his enormous talent he was constantly seeking new frontiers.

This evening he is celebrated by artists who, like Asmussen himself, possess an enormous musical curiosity and an uncontrollable desire to play music. Across different genres, Asmussen's everlasting innovative music will be interpreted, and his musical originality will be celebrated by jazz pioneers of today, hereof two of the earlier prizewinners: Jan Lundgren in 2019 and Mads Mathias in 2018. The prize is awarded by Svend Asmussen's widow, Ellen Bick Asmussen.

Nancy Harms (Vocal / US)Peter Rosendahl (Piano / DK)Graig Earle (Bass / CA)Janus Templeton (Drums / DK)

Here's what the jazz world has been missing: a new singer who can sing a ballad absolutely convincing, and who has both sweetness, passion and strength. The American singer Nancy Harms has a great love for Denmark and has felt many parts of herself awaken near the shores of Øresund. At the moment, Nancy and Peter Rosendal are in the process of creating new music that thematizes Denmark seen through Harms’ eyes.

Nancy Harms has the skills and desire to challenge jazz as an established art form, and to challenge her audience and not least herself. The impressive and versatile trio is hand-picked and is guaranteed to give Harms the ultimate backing, as all three musicians are known for their ability to give the music a completely personal touch.

As a listener, you can expect a Cuban version of a mixture of McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea and Brad Mehldau. Pierre Dørge & New Jungle Orchestra: 41 Year Anniversary

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Pierre Dørge (Guitar/Conductor / DK)Gunnar Halle (Trumpet / DK)Jakob Mygind (Soprano/Tenor Sax / NO)Anders Banke (Clarinet/Bass Clarinet/Tenor Sax / DK)Kenneth Agerholm (Trombone / DK)Irene Becker (Piano/Synthesizer / DK)Thommy Andersson (Bass / SE)Ayi Solomon (African Percussion / GA)Martin Andersen (Drums / DK)

One of Denmark’s absolute great national orchestras in jazz is called New Jungle Orchestra. Due to COVID-19, we unfortunately had to cancel the concert that was to celebrate the orchestra's 40th anniversary in 2020. Fortunately, we can celebrate the orchestra's 41 years with this concert!

NJO has through their traveling all over the world established their sound and a musical expression that collects inspiration from music from the Nordic countries to Sibiria, India, Bali, USA, Africa, The Middle East and The Deer Park in Denmark – all these sources of inspiration are mixed, intertwined and interpreted so there is something for every listener. Incarnated jazz haters have been converted to unconditional jazz lovers after spending two sets with NJO, and even those who have heard NJO multiple times still have a sensational experience every time Pierre Dørge and his troop of well-trained improvisers take the stage. This night we can expect a sublime mixture of newly composed music and old NJO-hits in new versions. You’ll never leave a New Jungle Orchestra concert unaffected!

“Upcoming” is Montmartre’s series of talent concerts where upcoming artists test the boundaries of jazz.
Oliver Skou-Due (Piano / DK)Isak Schiødt (Tenor Sax / DK)Malthe Kaptain (Trumpet / DK)Lukas Loeb (Bass / DK)Mikkel Blæsild Vuust (Drums / DK)

Oliver Skou-Due Kvintet is based on the 21-year-old pianist Oliver Skou-Due's compositions from his debut album "Just an Album". Jazz reviewer Niels Overgård has stated about the record: "With charming modesty, the mere 21-year-old pianist, Oliver Skou-Due, has called his debut album" Just An Album” (…) Yes, in the vast amount of music that is out there, Oliver Skou-Due's record is just another album. But for Oliver Skou-Due, it is a huge step into the world of music"

With an unimpressed freshness, the quintet's music jumps between the different styles of jazz, alternating between pompous numbers and a more playful impro-jazz. The whole thing is spiced with large amounts of high spirits and a good portion of madness, which to a great extent leaves respect, and a desire to hear more from the young musicians.

Oliver Skou-Due Kvintet is one of the four finalists in Jazzkonkurrencen 2020 and has in that context been given the possibility to perform as a headliner at Jazzhus Montmartre. The concert is presented in collaboration with JazzDanmark and Gangstedfonden.

Oliver Skou-Due Kvintet tager udgangspunkt i den 21-årige jazzpianist Oliver Skou-Dues kompositioner fra hans debutalbum ”Just An Album”.

Carsten Dahl Trinity

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Carsten Dahl (Piano / DK)Nils 'Bosse' Davidsen (Bass / DK)Stefan Pasborg (Drums / DK)

A tough and raw trio constellation with the master pianist Carsten Dahl as the leader. Dahl brings one of the country’s most attentive bassists Nils ‘Bosse’ Davidsen and the ultra-dynamic drummer Stefan Pasborg. And the music? Aggressive, flexible, playful, right on the spot and of course tough and raw.

It’s trio music that doesn’t exist elsewhere, which constantly develops and digs out new musical expressions, which no one else has been in the proximity of. In other words: Music going forward with solid roots in and great respect for the already existing. The concerts are based on their recently release "Mirrors Within", released in December 2020 on Storyville Records. The dogma here was to record in a single run without talking to each other.

Koncerterne tager udgangspunkt i deres nyligt udsendte udgivelse "Mirrors Within" som udkom i december 2020 hos Storyville Records. Dogmet her var at indspille ud i en lang køre uden at tale sammen.

Anders Bergcrantz: Elevate

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Anders Bergcrantz (Trumpet / SE)Tomas Franck (Tenor Sax / SE)Chico Lindvall (Guitar / SE)Sven-Erik Lundeqvist (Piano / SE)Lars Lundström (Bass / SE)Niclas Campagnol (Drums / SE)

Anders Bergcrantz steps up on Montmartre’s stage once again, this time with the newly released album “Elevate”. And if there’s a musician who lifts up the music, it’s Bergcrantz. He has been awarded with the distinguished award as “Best Jazz Trumpet Player in the World” two times by the acknowledged jazz blog “Jazz Station” by Arnaldo De’Souteiro, and his extremely potent and aggressive play has since the 80’s been a constant source of satisfaction for jazz lovers.

Stylistically, we are back in the 70’s and 80’s when Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw set the agenda – while Bergcrantz adds inspirations from all that music which has influenced jazz since. This evening, Anders Bergcrantz brings some of the sister country’s absolute best musicians. Look forward to experiencing physical and acoustic jazz that blows you away, while the soul gets a nice round of rhythmical massage.

Mikkel Ploug Solo + Nikolaj Hess Solo

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Mikkel Ploug (Guitar / DK)Nikolaj Hess (Piano / DK)

An evening that offers two very authentic Danish solo performers, playing each their instrument with their own musical personality.

Guitarist Mikkel Ploug is a dynamic musician in rapid development. His playing moves effortlessly in between genres with a strong focus on preserving the groove and the melodic originality of the music. During Denmark's first COVID-19 shutdown, Mikkel Ploug played 28 nights in a row from his balcony - both for neighbors and fans who listened from all over the world. The lullabies and evening songs in new guitar solo arrangements are gathered on the album "Balcony Lullabies", and this evening Ploug moves from the balcony to Montmartre’s stage.

The pianist Nikolaj Hess is one of the most original figures in Danish jazz. He is constantly looking for new ways of expression and has a constant retention of the music's strong rhythm. With the project "Impressions of Bob Dylan Revisited", Hess tackles songwriter Bob Dylan's rich archive of fantastic songs, which he gives completely new life through his ability to maintain and constantly offer new suggestions for variations on the well-known and beloved songs.

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Thomas Fonnesbæk (Bass / DK)Justin Kauflin (Piano / US)Morten Lund (Drums / DK)

Bassist Thomas Fonnesbæk has several fine collaborations with pianists. This time the playdate is with Justin Kauflin, whose sublime mastery of the instrument points to his home country, the United States. And we have to mention his solid swing, the curious right-hand runs and an inexhaustible imagination - all qualities that fit perfectly with Fonnesbæk's lavish playing on the double bass.

The repertoire is both standards and own compositions - all in own arrangements and performed charmingly, captivatingly and with a liberating ease. The two musicians challenge and play with each other like two elegant cats, and just like cats, they always land on their feet. When they are accompanied by drummer Morten Lund, there is no reason at all to stay at home. So, line up in the queue; you are guaranteed to love it.
