— WBGO / Jazz Night in America (US)

Glimrende underholdning." — The Guardian (UK) om albummet Fly

"Den bedste unge jazzvokalist i Los Angeles.." — LA Weekly (US)

🇬🇧 ENGLISH:

What kind of jazz do they play?

The great American vocalist Michael Mayo and his band play a wonderful mix of swinging jazz, neo-soul and R&B - often spiced with technical finesse such as loop pedals that create complex layers of vocal harmonies. He is known for using his voice as an instrument on a par with a saxophone or a trumpet.

What should I know about them?
He was raised in a musical home in Los Angeles as the son of musicians for icons such as Diana Ross and Earth, Wind & Fire. Mayo was only the third vocalist ever to be admitted to the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (now Herbie Hancock Institute), where he was taught by legends such as Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Here in Denmark, he has most recently thrilled audiences in collaboration as a soloist for the DR Big Band.

What do the critics say?

"Like one of his great role models, Bobby McFerrin, Mayo leads the human voice in brilliant and surprising directions." — WBGO / Jazz Night in America (US)

"A fantastic fusion of original works and jazz standards ... Excellent entertainment." — The Guardian (UK) on the album Fly

"The best young jazz vocalist in Los Angeles.." — LA Weekly (US)
