EXTRA CONCERT at LOUISIANA on 3 November. Read more here
Kenny Barron - Piano
Russell Hall - Bass
Jonathan Barber - Drums
Ekep Nkwelle - Vocals
In the series with jazz's greatest international giants, the legend Kenny Barron comes to Copenhagen for a rare intimate concert with his quartet, and, as something new, also with a vocalist.
The soon-to-be 84-year-old Kenny Barron is one of the greatest living masters at the piano - one of the last remaining nestors from jazz's groundbreaking golden age.
What do I need to know?
Kenny Barron plays with tremendous virtuosity, which has secured him no less than 14 Grammy nominations over the years.
The last time he was on the Montmartre stage was in 2019, but the chance is there again to hear the master with his beautiful and sensitive touch in the historic space, from which he has many memories.
He is known for his harmonic depth and rhythmic vitality. Not least of all, his immensely beautiful live album "People Time" recorded in Montmartre in March 1991 is inscribed in the world history of jazz. Here he played a duo with saxophonist Stan Getz shortly before his death. The album is often described as one of their most beautiful ever.
Barron is no longer a yearling, and the time between trips across the Atlantic has become longer. The intimate concerts with him have become rare.
What kind of jazz do they play?
In this concert, Barron presents hand-picked songs under the title "Songbook" from his first album with a vocalist in a six-decade career. He revisits and revitalizes 13 of his own original compositions, which have now been given lyrical facets through evocative lyrics written by songwriter Janice Jarrett. Vocalist Ekep Nkwelle has been given the privilege of being his chosen voice on the trip to Copenhagen.
The repertoire ranges widely from captivating bossa nova, energetic samba and Afro-Cuban undertones to gripping, emotional jazz ballads and swinging blues.
Which musicians are on board?
- Ekep Nkwelle (vocals): The Cameroonian-American singer was raised in Washington, D.C. and has risen to fame in record time. She also appears on Barron’s Songbook album, where her luminous voice and personal interpretations elevate the thoughtful tracks “Illusion” and “Sonia Braga.”
- Russell Hall (bass): The Grammy and Emmy-nominated bassist hails from Jamaica and graduated from The Juilliard School. He has made a strong mark on the American jazz scene through close collaborations with heavyweights such as Wynton Marsalis, Wayne Shorter and Jon Batiste, among others, and he brings a deep, rhythmic authority to the quartet.
- Jonathan Barber (drums): He is considered one of the most prominent and successful young drummers on the modern jazz scene. His drumming is known for blending traditional jazz with elements of gospel, rock, soul and fusion. He masters everything from straight-ahead jazz to modern time signatures. Barber has toured and recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz, such as Pat Metheny and Christian McBride.
What do the reviewers say?
- The Guardian (John Fordham):
"Barron plays with a devoted warmth, and a delicacy that comes from having cultivated fine nuances over a lifetime."
- DownBeat (Gary Walker):
"Barron's every statement is expressed with uttermost elegance and virtuosity."

Musiksanseriet's songs are always linked to a situation that the child can relate to, and for the youngest children, music, sensation and motor development are a trinity.
The child perceives music with his whole body and supports the child's senses. While the music is playing, the music will help motor, language and cognitive development.
These elements will therefore naturally merge into Musiksanseriet's concerts. The children are met exactly where they are, and the concert is first and foremost for them.
The music series was created by jazz singer and composer Malene Kjærgård and won the Danish Music Awards "Children's Jazz Award 2023"

Rumpistol Ensemble - Piano Trilogy Revisited

Dreamlike, cinematic live poetry that invites calm and reflection
Jens B. Christiansen (Rumpistol) - Piano/Synths
Maria Jagd - Violin/Viola
Sven Dam Meinild - Saxophone
Nicolai Land Hansen - Bass
Frederik Bülow - Drums
Award-winning composer and pianist Jens B. Christiansen—aka Rumpistol—will embark on a tour in February 2027 with a new quintet, performing music from his critically acclaimed piano trilogy: *After The Flood*, *Isola*, and *Going Inside*.
With this piano trilogy, released between 2020 and 2023, Rumpistol made a significant artistic leap. While he had been a prominent voice on the electronic music scene and a co-founder of the band Kalaha for over two decades, the trilogy placed him in a new musical landscape bridging neoclassical, ambient, and jazz genres.
The albums *After The Flood*, *Isola*, and *Going Inside* marked a breakthrough in terms of both artistic acclaim and audience reach. The music found new listeners and earned regular airplay on P8 Jazz, while international figures—such as BBC host Gilles Peterson—highlighted the releases as "fantastic and worth seeking out."
The trilogy emerged from a personal period of burnout, during which Christiansen rediscovered his connection to music through the piano. The result is an intimate, meditative sonic universe where organic compositions and improvisation blend seamlessly. On the February 2027 tour, the music will be presented through fresh live interpretations.
The concerts offer a sensory journey through Rumpistol’s piano trilogy, situated at the intersection of ambient electronica, atmospheric jazz, and neoclassical moods. It is a live experience for audiences who appreciate both deep immersion and powerful melodic landscapes—perfect for fans of artists such as Nils Frahm, Yann Tiersen, and Max Richter.

Bo Stief - Den evige drøm

At 80 years young, the bass legend gathers four young talents for a tribute to life
Bo Stief: kontrabas, elbas og koncertdesign
Kirstine Elise Pedersen: cello
Mathæus Bech: kontrabas
Mads Nørgaard: guitar
Rasmus Mikkelsen: trompet
Anne Stief: siger Bo Stiefs digte
Following two completely sold-out concerts—which drew standing ovations—celebrating bass legend Bo Stief’s 80th birthday in October, we are now adding an extra concert: a Sunday matinee at 3:00 PM during the 2027 Vinterjazz festival.
Bo Stief will be joined by four young star musicians—handpicked by him for this occasion—all of whom he has mentored during their rise. Also appearing is his wife, Anne, who will recite his poems.
Bo Stief has played with numerous giants, from Dexter Gordon to Miles Davis, and continues tirelessly to perform across generations and genres.
What is he known for?
Bo Stief’s musical heart pulses with young blood, vigor, and vitality. He began his musical journey at the age of 17—right here at Jazzhus Montmartre—launching what has become one of the most significant careers in recent Danish music history.
His ascent was marked early on by a long-standing collaboration and friendship with trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg. This began in groups such as the Riel-Mikkelborg Quintet, which triumphed at the Montreux and Newport Jazz Festivals in 1968. Later, he was part of the group Entrance, which released three highly acclaimed, best-selling LPs between 1976 and 1985—often described as Europe’s answer to Weather Report.
Bo has also enjoyed a substantial international career; he contributed to Miles Davis’s Grammy-winning album *Aura* and has appeared on hundreds of other records alongside an impressive array of Danish and international musicians. Bo Stief has a special passion for cultivating new musical talent. He has taught at every Danish conservatory, as well as at numerous MGK (pre-conservatory) programs, folk high schools, and *efterskoler* (boarding schools). His workshops for young talent—held under the auspices of the annual *Playground Live* initiative—have been particularly successful, leaving their mark on an entire generation of emerging young musicians.
What can I expect?
Drawing on years of experience, the music is—in Bo’s own words—"tried-and-tested, life-affirming, uplifting 'NOW' music, full of vigor and energy, which transcends boundaries and crosses multiple genres." It reflects his versatile and impressive international career.
The highly unusual combination of instruments, paired with the musicians' diverse backgrounds, creates a unique band sound. Bo describes it as follows: "It is 'here and now'—spontaneous, wild, challenging, poetic, chaotic, wondrous, atmospheric, vital, and dynamic—an explosive musical experience."
These handpicked young star musicians interpret Bo Stief’s meticulously crafted, colorful, collage-like compositions with high energy and deep immersion. The music draws inspiration from classical, rock, pop, jazz, improvisation, New Age, world music, film scores, and folk music. As Bo puts it: "Fueled by passion, all these influences converge into a forward-looking, optimistic, collective 'NOW' music."
Bo Stief’s thought-provoking "NOW-word poems" are recited from the stage—poetically and with deep feeling—by his wife, Anne Stief, serving as an atmospheric element of the ensemble's overall expression.
What should I know about the band? There are no fewer than two bassists on stage this evening. In addition to Bo Stief, the lineup includes bassist Mathæus Bech—who studied under Bo as his teacher and mentor from the age of 15—before going on to complete his conservatory education, first at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory and subsequently at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen.
Mathæus Bech has, among other things, performed with Guldimund and served as a musical director for theater productions at Østre Gasværk. He also received a Gaffa Award for his initiative during the COVID-19 pandemic, in which he broadcast live concerts featuring a wide array of musicians from his living room in Christianshavn. Today, he is one half of the duo Dybfølt.
The duo Dybfølt also features cellist Kirstine Elise Pedersen. They are known for both original compositions and innovative interpretations—bridging the gap between classical and folk music—of works by composers such as Rued Langgaard and Else Marie Pade. In 2024, Dybfølt won the prestigious P2 Prize from the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR), and in 2025, their latest album, *Decembersol*, was selected as P2’s "Album of the Week."
Guitarist Mads Nørgaard is widely recognized within the jazz scene, notably as a member of the group The Orgelheimers. He is also a key figure in the project Lucky Lo, which—with its genre-bending alt-pop—has performed at venues such as the Roskilde Festival and garnered significant critical acclaim.
Trumpeter Rasmus Mikkelsen was a participant in Bo Stief’s talent initiative, *Playground Live*, back in 2019. Today, he is a sought-after and versatile musician, active across both the jazz and rock scenes.

Carsten Dahl Quartet feat. Tomas Franck

Dahl returns with the Franck brothers: A Spoonful of Franckification
Carsten Dahl: Piano
Tomas Franck: Tenor Saxophone
Daniel Franck: Bass
Martin Maretti Andersen: Drums
When you think of Swedish saxophonist Tomas Franck, what springs to mind is not merely down-to-earth joy of playing and musical passion, but also such words as love, devotion, intensity and absorption. Great, universal concepts which cannot be shrugged off with an "oh, well". There is no speculation in superficial aesthetics - the musical expression and contents become one. And it is impossible to catch him out in idle talk. The sources, the inheritance from the great jazz tenor players, are manifold, but Franck gives them a special, spellbinding glow when he blends them with echoes of the Swedish folk tone. A true master on the horn.
Danish pianist, composer and pioneer within improvisation Carsten Dahl has, over the last four decades, established himself as a master composing pianist.
Noted as a remarkable, wild and wide-ranging artist on the European jazz scene, his personal imprint is unmistakable in all of his diverse projects – from bebop and hardbop groups, trio projects, solo recordings to orchestral works, from free jazz to Bach's Goldberg Variations and the Well-Tempered Clavier. Johnathan Blake - My Life Matters

A rare visit from the American star drummer, performing his latest Blue Note album
Johnathan Blake: Drums
Morgan Guerin: Saxophone, EWI
Fabian Almazan: Piano, keyboards
Jalen Baker: Vibraphone
Dezron Douglas: Bass
As part of Montmartre’s series of intimate concerts featuring jazz giants, we present the renowned American drummer and composer Johnathan Blake. He ranks among the elite of New York’s finest musicians and stands out as one of the most exciting and innovative composers in modern jazz today.
What can you expect?
Over the course of two evenings, Johnathan Blake will showcase his compelling and critically acclaimed new Blue Note album, *My Life Matters*. According to Blake, the record serves as a call to action against the persistent inequality and injustice faced by Black people in the United States; it is intended both as a musical statement and a plea for equality and unity.
As a drummer, Johnathan Blake is celebrated for his powerful, inventive, and sophisticated style—a blend of modern post-bop and avant-garde-influenced contemporary jazz. Few can weave together polyrhythmic patterns and lyrical melodies into such a seamless musical symbiosis. This creates the foundation for his beautiful, melodic compositions, which fuse electric and acoustic sonic landscapes.
What should you know about him?
Johnathan Blake has effectively reinvented his instrument. He grew up within the vibrant 1990s jazz scene of Philadelphia—a city long recognized for nurturing and hosting some of the greatest figures in jazz history, including John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, McCoy Tyner, and Philly Joe Jones. With strong support from his father, the legendary jazz violinist John Blake Jr., he quickly found his place among the city’s hottest jazz musicians, rappers, and DJs. He also crossed paths with his drumming idol, Elvin Jones, who took the young Blake under his wing.
His career soon gained momentum, and for a long time, Blake was a sought-after sideman—a first-choice collaborator for icons such as Dr. Lonnie Smith, Pharoah Sanders, Ravi Coltrane, Chris Potter, and Brad Mehldau. He is also a permanent member of the legendary Kenny Barron Trio. Since 2011, Blake has released six critically acclaimed albums as a bandleader, recorded with his group, "Pentad." It is this very ensemble that will join him for this concert at Montmartre. The members are rising star musicians whom Blake personally handpicked from New York’s vibrant jazz scene.
What do the critics say?
"The album is more than just a concept album. It unfolds as a profound human suite, where rhythm, texture, and improvisation become tools for an urgent meditation..." — All About Jazz on "My Life Matters"
"Johnathan Blake has become one of the most complete drummers on the contemporary scene—a musician who, with equal mastery, can drive a big band forward or contribute nuanced, delicate details to an acoustic group." — DownBeat Magazine

RYMDEN feat. Bugge Wesseltoft, Magnus Öström & Dan Berglund

Nordic jazz meets progressive fusion in a supertrio rooted in E.S.T.
Bugge Wesseltoft: Piano/keys
Magnus Öström: Drums
Dan Berglund: Bass
Rymden is the name of the groundbreaking trio created by three unconditional Nordic heavyweights, who have all made a name for themselves on the world stage for years with their innovative jazz.
Two of the trio's three members, Dan Berglund on bass and Magnus Öström on drums, are particularly known for their revolutionary participation in the Esbjörn Svensson Trio (E.S.T.) until the frontman passed away in a tragic drowning accident in 2004.
For a long time after that, they did not perform with their instruments. But when they finally got going again, it was, among other things, in collaboration with the equally amazing Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft. Together they have picked up the gauntlet from E.S.T. and taken the meeting between Nordic jazz and progressive fusion even further.
Bugge Wesseltoft is known as a jazz innovator, and is, among other things, behind the group "New Conception of Jazz", and has played with great artists such as Billy Cobham and Pat Metheny. For jazz nerds, it can be mentioned that he - in line with Keith Jarrett - is in the stable of the prestigious record label ECM
Although Rymden's warm beating heart has deep roots in much of what E.S.T stood for, Wesseltoft's spice has drawn them to new places here. The sometimes mythical Nordic landscape is brought to life by synthesizer arpeggios and quirky, but precise drum rhythms. In an inevitable meeting, the two merge and Rymden's contours emerge in the morning mist.
Although the more fusion-jazz is a mainstay in Rymden's sound, this is difficult to define, as the genre range is so wide. One moment, ballads are perfected, so that the audience sits dreamily in a sound universe that can evoke early childhood memories. The next changes tempo and beat to intense, sophisticated prog-funk numbers, so that you can be close to falling off the ledge.
This super-trio exudes something particularly soulful. A special rhythmic sensation, if you will. A rustle of subtle details built on a foundation of an innovative approach to what new Nordic jazz can be. Rymden constantly searches for new musical heights and along the way has picked up elements of 60s psychedelia, but also punk and electric.
As a group, Rymden has 4 albums and several singles behind them and has worked with, among others, the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and John Scofield.

What should I expect?
When Spanish piano star Chano Domínguez joins forces with Danish alto saxophonist Benjamin Koppel, the audience can look forward to an evening full of lyrical beauty and authentic music. Benjamin Koppel is a true multi-artist and musical pioneer. He has released over 40 albums under his own name and is one of the few Danes to really make a name for himself on the American jazz scene. This means that he regularly collaborates with giants such as Kenny Werner, Johnathan Blake, Brian Blade, Joe Lovano and Jack DeJohnette when he was still alive. However, he really got his breakthrough in Denmark in 2022 as the author of the best-selling novel "Annas sang".
